Monks Defeat Drew, Fall to New Jersey City

FORT MYERS, FL –Saint Joseph’s (3-1) split a pair of contests on day two of the Monks’ southern trip, with an extra-inning 3-2 win over Drew University in the opener and a 5-2 loss to New Jersey City University in the nightcap. Madylan Kluna ’12 (Standish, ME) scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs with seven strikeouts in eight innings to earn the victory against Drew.

GAME ONE - Drew

The Monks gained an early advantage by scoring a pair of unearned runs off two Ranger miscues in the first frame. Emily Leverone ’12 (Hampton, NH) walked and Liddy van der Linden ’10 (Worcester, MA) reached on a fielder’s choice and both players scored on an error after a two-out single by Alyssa Dunn ’11 (Standish, ME).

The Rangers tied the game with two runs off three hits in the top of the third, as second baseman Kerri Eggert ’12 (Denville, NJ) registered a two-RBI single with two out.

The teams combined to strand nine runners over the final 3 ½ innings, as both Kluna and Drew starter Adriana Durso ’11 (Old Tappan, NJ) worked to shut down the opposing offensive efforts.

Nicole Spiotta ’11 (Morris Plains, NJ) was placed at second base in the top of the eighth and was immediately bunted over to third with an Eggert sacrifice. Kluna then induced a flyout to center and a groundout to extinguish the threat.

Dunn began the inning at second for the Monks and was lifted in favor of pinch runner Kirin Schrum ’13 (Littleton, NH), who quickly scampered to third on a wild pitch. Up next for the Monks was second baseman Jillian Kimball ’10 (Albany Township, ME), who came through with the game-winning base hit.

For St. Joe’s, van der Linden was 2-4 with a double and a run scored and Maria Labbe ’12 (Lewiston, ME) went 2-3.

GAME TWO - NJCU

St. Joe’s scored single runs in the first and second innings and maintained the two-run edge until the Gothic Knights plated five off six hits and an SJC error in the bottom of the sixth.

The Monks took advantage of a pair of NJCU errors in the first frame to grab the game’s first lead. Anna Willis ’10 (Gorham, ME) reached on a miscue to lead off the inning, swiped second and scored when Shufelt singled and NJCU third baseman Rebecca Satz ’13 (Morris Plains, NJ) made an error on the play.

In the second inning, Willis doubled to send home Caitlin Schrum ’12 (Littleton, NH), who entered the game as a pinch runner after third baseman Heather Tripp ’13 (Lovell, ME) walked to lead off the frame.

The Gothic Knights opened the sixth with three consecutive singles before Andrea Jijon ’13 (North Bergen, NJ) drove home a pair with a double to tie the game. Tara Perucci ’10 (Wallington, NJ) followed with a ground ball to van der Linden, who committed a miscue on the play, ending a 25-game errorless streak by the defensive stalwart. NJCU scored a run on the play and tacked on two more before the inning was finalized.

For the Monks, Shufelt was 2-3 and starter Kiera Walsh ’11 (Benton, ME) allowed eight hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts over five innings of work. Kayla Vannah ’13 (Waldoboro, ME) made her first collegiate appearance in the sixth and allowed one hit with a punch out in an inning of relief.

Saint Joseph’s will take on SUNY-Fredonia (9:00 AM) and WPI (1:00 PM) on Wednesday.
