Monks Take Two From Terriers, 10-2 & 7-2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-12) swept a non-conference softball doubleheader with Thomas College (4-14) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Tuesday evening. The Monks opened with a 10-2 triumph in five innings and completed the twinbill sweep with a 7-2 victory.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 10, THOMAS 2 (5 Inn.)

The Monks tallied 10 hits, including three doubles, in the opener as the hosts' 1-thru-4 hitters combined to go 7-for-12 with seven runs and seven RBI in the team's first mercy rule win of the season. Only six of the Monks 10 runs went in the books as earned as the Terriers committed four errors in the first game.

IN THE CIRCLE:

SJC junior starting pitcher Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) earned the win after tossing three no-hit innings with four walks and two strikeouts and junior Rylee Page (Somersworth, N.H.) yielded two runs on three hits with a walk and a punchout in two innings of relief.

Thomas starter Brooklyn Federico (Monmouth, Maine) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks with two K's in two innings. Jennie Whitten (Enfield, Maine) allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks in 2.2 frames of relief for the visitors.

AT THE BAT:

  • Senior Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) was 2-3 with three runs, a double, and two RBI
  • Junior Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) went 2-3 with three runs and a stolen base
  • Sophomore Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) was 2-2 with two runs scored
  • Junior Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) added two hits, including a double, with an RBI
  • Sophomore Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) was 1-2 with a run, a double, and four RBI

SAINT JOSEPH'S 7, THOMAS 2

The Monks secured a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) plated Verreault with a base hit and promptly scored on a two-run homer off the bat of Bouchard.

St. Joe's held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the third when the hosts managed to score three runs without registering a hit as Bouchard and Foley scored on passed balls and junior Abby Carpenter (Bath, Maine) knocked in Goodnough with a sac fly to make it a 7-2 game.

The Terriers had the bases loaded with two out in the top of the fourth, but Goodnough worked out of the jam with a strikeout.

IN THE CIRCLE:

Goodnough claimed the victory after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Freshman reliever Alyssa Ladd (Brooksville, Maine) worked two innings of hitless relief in the triumph.

AT THE BAT:

  • Bouchard was 2-3 with two runs, her sixth home run of the season, and two RBI
  • Verreault was 3-4 with a run, a double, and an RBI
  • Sophomore Anna Gilbert (Gray, Maine) was 2-3 with a run scored

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 37-10 all-time versus Thomas College.

Saint Joseph's will host Norwich University on Thursday in a conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:00 PM.
