Softball Skates Past Anna Maria College, 7-1 & 14-0

Worcester, Mass. – The Anna Maria College softball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Saint Joseph's College today at New Balance Field in Worcester, Mass. The Monks picked up a 7-1 win in game one and shutout the AMCATS 14-0 in the nightcap.

The AMCATS record now stands at 3-29 (1-19 GNAC) while the Monks move to 26-4 (18-2 GNAC) overall.

GAME 1: Anna Maria 1, Saint Joseph's (ME) 7

The Monks plated the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. With two outs Lindsay Moore (Barrington, NH) doubled to deep center field and trotted home on Danica Gleason's (South Portland, ME) triple to right center field for the early 1-0 lead.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning the AMCATS plated their only run of the game. Nichole Lowe (Saugus, MA) reached first after a pass ball on a strikeout gave AMC life. Lowe followed with a stolen base to move into scoring position. Sam Miller (Dudley, MA) stroked a single to left field to put runners on the corners and Lowe would come home on a defensive miscue to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Saint Joseph's Connie Grovo (Limington, ME) and Moore delivered RBI hits in the top of the fourth to push the Monks lead to 5-1 and SJC added a pair of runs in top of the sixth for the 7-1 final.

Moore led the Monks in game one hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, ME) and Jennifer Murphy (Andover, MA) each had two hits. Laura Jordan (Orrington, ME) picked up the win for the Monks tallying 10 strikeouts in five innings off work.

Samantha Miller collected both hits for Anna Maria. Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, MA) was saddled with the loss for AMC.

GAME 2 Anna Maria 0, Saint Joseph's (ME) 14

Angela Vousboukis led the AMCATS with two hits, while Ashley Anderson (Palmer, MA), Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, MA), Ashley George (Leicester, MA) and Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, MA) each poked singles for Anna Maria.

Once again the Monks wasted little time tipping the scoreboard in the nightcap. Lindsay Moore laced a single to left field scoring Kim Jordan, who had opened the game with a single. Moore would come around to score on an error by the AMCAT defense to build a 2-0 advantage after one-half inning.

The Monks scored in in each of the first three innings, adding three runs in the second. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Theresa Hendrix and Molly Mack in the visitor half of the third inning extended the Monks lead to 7-0 and chased Vousboukis from the circle.

Saint Joseph's College (ME) would double the lead in the fourth inning putting a seven spot on the board for the insurmountable 14-0 lead.

SJC had eleven players with at least one hit in the game. Marissa Hernandez (Goshen, NY) had the big day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI's.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Emmanuel College to wrap-up the 2014 campaign. Saint Joseph's hosts University of Saint Joseph (CT) tomorrow in a GNAC doubleheader slated to start at 1:00 PM.
