Monks Suffer Sweep on Opening Day

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (0-2) suffered a season-opening sweep at the hands of Husson University (2-0) on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Husson 9, St. Joe's 1

Saint Joseph's got a run in the top of the first after Ashley Emery walked, took second, and was driven in on an RBI single by Emily Eagleston. Very quickly, the Eagles had a resounding answer in the bottom of the inning.  Katie Windsor singled and eventually scored on Kenzie Dore's RBI double to left center to even the score at 1-1. Morgan Coleman reached on an error, and a Jen Jones RBI single brought in Dore to make it 2-1 Eagles. Maddy Fowler then ripped a double to center, bringing in Coleman to give Husson a 3-1 lead. After Erin Bonenfant walked, Jones scored on a passed ball, and then a Katie Raymond bases loaded walk made it 5-1, Eagles. Sydney Ames then singled in her second at-bat of the inning, driving in the final two runs of the inning.

Altogether, the Eagles first inning of the season went for seven runs on six hits.

Husson added another run in the 4th. Dore, Jones and Fowler all walked to load the bases, and Bonenfant brought in Jones with a fielder's choice to short.

The Eagles added the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, on singles by Raymond and Ames to left field, and a sacrifice bunt from Windsor. Dore's grounder to third scored Raymond to give Husson a 9-1 lead and end the game early.

IN THE CIRCLE

  • Jones (1-0) put on a dominant performance in the circle, picking up her first win of the season, giving up one run on four hits while striking out eleven and walking only two. She recorded seven straight strikeouts.
  • For the Monks, Eagleston (L, 0-1) went three innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking three.

OFF THE BAT

  • Dore made her Husson debut going 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and two runs scored.
  • Fowler went 1-for-2 with an RBI double and scored a run.
  • Bonefant picked up her first two RBI of the season
  • Ames went 3-for-4 in game one of the doubleheader afternoon.

GAME TWO: Husson 8, St. Joe's 1

For the second game in a row, the Monks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead. Meranda Martin led off the game with a single, stole second, and scored on Lydia Howarth's single to right center.

A déjà vu first inning, the Eagles immediately answered in the bottom half starting off with a Sydney Ames single to right field. With runners at the corners, Kenzie Dore brought in Ames with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. After Morgan Coleman walked to load the bases, Erin Bonenfant ripped a single past the shortstop to bring in Dore, giving Husson a 2-1 edge. With the bases still loaded, Whitney Bess knocked a single to right center, which was fumbled by the fielder, allowing the bases to clear and making the score 5-1, Husson. A Katie Raymond single to left brought in Bess, as the Eagles wrapped up the inning with a 6-1 lead.

The Green and Gold tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 4th. Raymond hit a deep triple down the right field line and scored on Ames' single down the opposite side of the field. Windsor scored after a single by Bisson, and an RBI double from Coleman, giving Husson an 8-1 lead after four innings, on their way to victory number two of the day.

IN THE CIRCLE

  • Ames (1-0) picked up the win, throwing a complete game. She gave up just one run and walk while striking out five.
  • Sydney Hatch (0-1) pitched four innings for St. Joe's, giving up five earned runs on nine hits with a walk.
  • Meredith Pence pitched two scoreless innings for the Monks.

OFF THE BAT

  • Raymond went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and scored one run.
  • Ames was 2-for-4 with an RBI and made it home once.
  • Dore went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored; she finished the afternoon going 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and scored three runs over two games. 
  • Coleman was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, and one run scored.

UP NEXT!

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow with different scenery, as Saint Joseph's will host Husson for another doubleheader at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
