Saint Joseph's Drops Two to Husson

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University (10-6) won a pair of games over Saint Joseph's College (8-10) in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles opened with an 8-0 triumph and capped the sweep with a 3-2 victory.

In the first game, the Eagles held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when they plated four runs off three hits, including a two-run single by Kenzie Dore. Husson clinched the mercy-rule victory by scoring three runs without a base hit in the bottom of the sixth.

SJC junior starting pitcher Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (three earned) off six hits with two punch-outs in five innings. Freshman Paige Connery walked three and allowed three unearned runs in 1/3 inning of work.

Husson junior starter McKenna Smith fanned 13 and allowed just two hits and three walks in six innings to improve to 7-2 on the season.

With eight total hits in the game, neither team featured a repeat hitter.

In the nightcap, the Eagles held a 3-0 advantage until the top of the sixth, when sophomore center fielder Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) roped a two-run double. The Monks had the tying run on base with one out in the top of the seventh, but Smith closed the door by striking out back-to-back SJC batters to close out the game and earn her second save of the year.

SJC junior starting pitcher Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and three walks with three K's in five innings. Junior Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning of relief duty.

Husson starter Jill Bisson picked up the win and is now 2-0 on the year after giving up two unearned runs off four hits with three punch-outs in 5.2 innings. Smith allowed a walk and fanned four batters in 1.1 innings of relief.

For the Monks, Goodnough went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Dore was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and two RBI.

Saint Joseph's will host Norwich University on Saturday in a conference doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 PM.
