STANDISH, Maine - The 19th Saint Joseph's College Athletics Hall of Fame Class was inducted with a ceremony at the Saint Joseph's lakeside events area on the evening of Saturday, September 10th. Kevin Fitzgerald '88 (Baseball), Lauren Hagerman '10 (Soccer/Lacrosse), Kayla Nowell '11 (Field Hockey), and Jonathan Horgan '12 (Lacrosse) are the latest individuals to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame, which grows to 100 members with the addition of the 2022 class.
The weather was perfect – clear skies, temperature in the 60's - for what was the first-ever SJC Hall of Fame induction ceremony to be hosted at the College's Sebago Lake property. After a brief introduction from Associate Vice President & Chief Athletics and Recreation Officer Will Rothermel, a delicious meal was served by the Pearson's Café staff. SJC women's soccer senior Sama Colatruglio (Mahopac, N.Y.) provided the Invocation prayer.
Current student-athletes Jackson Stanton '23, Keelin Sweeney '23, Molly McCluskey '23 and Xavier Michaud '23 served as student presenters and coaches Jim Graffam, Jenelle Harris, Rupert Lewis, and Mike Edgar introduced the 2022 Hall of Fame inductees.
A Haverhill, Massachusetts native, Kevin Fitzgerald was one of the finest infielders to ever don the Monks' uniform. In 146 career games, the four-year starting shortstop hit .327 (157-480) with 122 runs, 26 doubles, 11 triples, 12 home runs, 102 RBI and 38 stolen bases and helped lead Saint Joseph's to NAIA New England Championships in 1986 and 1988.
When he graduated in 1988, Fitzgerald ranked in the top five in virtually every offensive category and was the program's career leader in games, at bats, and runs. At the time of his induction, he remains among the Monks' all-time leaders in runs, triples, and stolen bases.
Lauren Hagerman, who hails from nearby Scarborough, was a two-sport standout as a member of the Saint Joseph's soccer and lacrosse programs.
In 79 career games on the soccer pitch, Hagerman netted seven goals with 10 assists for 24 total points and earned Second Team All-Conference honors following her junior season. At the time of her induction, the 2009 team captain ranked second in program history in games played.
An elite talent during the women's lacrosse program's first three seasons, Hagerman tallied 130 goals and 77 assists for 207 total points along with 133 ground balls and 157 draw controls in just 39 career games. The Nursing major graduated in 2010 as the Monks' career leader in points, assists, and draw controls and remains among the program's best in each of these statistical categories.
Kayla Nowell, who came to Saint Joseph's by way of Bridgton, Maine and Lake Region High School, was an offensive force who essentially rewrote the Monks' field hockey record book and played an important role in helping the program grow into one of the best in New England.
In 75 career games, the two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region honoree established new team records for goals (57), points (146), shots (346) and game-winning goals (13). In 2022, she still holds the program's shots record and ranks second in goals, assists (32), points, and game-winners.
Her efforts helped the Monks earn a pair of ECAC Tournament berths, claim two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) regular-season championships, and post a four-year record of 56-23 (.709), including an incredible 19-1 (.950) mark in NAC play.
A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, Jonathan Horgan is the first men's lacrosse player to enter the SJC Athletics Hall of Fame. Despite missing his sophomore season due to injury, the two-year captain graduated in 2012 as the Monks' all-time leader in goals (111), assists (67) and points (178) and, at the time of his induction, remains second in team history in goals and points and third in assists.
A two-time First Team All-Conference selection, Horgan was the first St. Joe's men's lacrosse player to garner ECAC All-New England and NEILA Senior All-Star Game recognition with both honors coming after his senior season. Remarkably consistent, he tallied at least 54 points in each of his three seasons, including his senior year when he scored 41 goals with 20 assists for 61 points and added eight man-up goals, 67 ground balls, and 18 caused turnovers in 16 contests.
