Women's Swimming Defeats Husson, 160-49

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's rolled to a 160-49 victory over Husson University in women's swimming action at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon. The Monks won all 13 events in the head to head competition.

One of the many highlights of the afternoon came in the first event when the Monks broke the program's 200-Medley relay record with a 2:05.59 effort. Mandy Avella '15 (Londonderry, N.H.), Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, Mass.), Hannah Gajewski '12 (Biddeford, Maine/McAuley), and Christine Cote '13 (Biddeford, Maine) combined to break the mark, which was originally set when Katie Brooks, Ashton Piers, Lindsay D'Ascanio, and Jamie Wojtkiewicz '12 (Bedford, N.H.) notched a 2:05.62 time at the 2009 NEISDA Championship.

Avella led the way with three wins as the freshman phenom posted top finishes in the 50-Back (31.33), 100-Back (1:08.29) and 100-IM (1:10.19) competitions. Gajewski placed first in the 100-Fly (1:07.75) and 50-Fly (30.44), Cote notched wins in the 200-Free (2:21.33) and 50-Free (28.59), Maccarrone added top finishes in the 50-Breast (36.92), and 100-Breast (1:21.07), and Wojtkiewicz registered triumphs in the 100-Free (1:02.64) and 500-Free (6:08.58).

Saint Joseph's capped the afternoon with a win in the 200-Free relay as Gajewski, Anne Roberts '12 (Hopkinton, N.H.), Kiani Camire '13 (Lewiston, Maine), and Wojtkiewicz combined to post a 1:56.45 time in the meet finale.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Monday when the Monks play host to University of New England in the Alfond Center Pool at 1:00 PM.
