2016 NEISDA Championships: Day One Recap

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Saint Joseph's College men's and women's swim teams have wrapped up the first day of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Friday evening. Through 18 events, the men are 11th with 49 points while the women are in 16th with 51.5 points.

Junior Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) highlighted the first day for the Monks by breaking the program's 100-Fly record with a 54.76 effort, good for seventh overall in the event.

Senior Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Steve Quinlan (Andover, Mass.) also qualified for the 100-Fly finals and placed eighth (56.74) and 13th (59.18), respectively.

Senior Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) competed in the 200-Back finals and placed 13th with a 2:08.70 time.

Senior Allie Krasco (Melrose, Mass.), senior Annie Fougere (Warner, N.H.), freshman Julia Rowlett (Saco, Maine) and senior Brooke Huberdeau (Andover, Mass.) raced together in the 400-Medley finals and finished 13th with a 4:40.43 time, which was over a second faster than the team's prelim effort.

On the women's side, Roger Williams University (551 points) holds a 20-point lead over perennial favorite Keene State College (531) while Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) counterpart Simmons College sits in third with 379 points.

For the Men, Keene State (329) owns a sizeable lead over Roger Williams (237.5) with GNAC foe Norwich University in third with 209 points.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN'S PRELIMS:

  • Fougere, junior Lauren Prue (Glenburn, Maine), junior Lauren Halvorsen (South Portland, Maine) and Huberdeau posted a 20th-place time in the 200-Free relay (1:57.29)
  • Huberdeau was 19th in the 500-Free (5:47.39)
  • Fougere was 21st in the 50-Breast (34.75)
  • Halvorsen placed 23rd in the 500-Free (6:00.36)
  • Prue placed 24th in the 200-IM (2:38.43)
  • Rowlett finished 24th in the 200-Back (2:29.24)
  • Krasco was 25th in the 200-IM (2:39.03) and 27th in the 200-Back (2:31.69)
  • Krasco, Fougere, Rowlett and Huberdeau finished 14th in the 400-Medley relay (4:41.85)

THE RUNDOWN – MEN'S PRELIMS:

  • Merlino, freshman Zack Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine), Gilvey and Johnson finished ninth in the 200-Free relay (1:34.39)
  • Johnson was sixth in the 100-Fly (55.39)
  • Merlino raced to an eighth-place finish in the 100-Fly (56.50)
  • Gilvey finished 13th in the 200-Back (2:07.02)
  • Quinlan placed 14th in the 100-Fly (59.71)
