Year: 7th Season

Prior to the beginning of the 2008-09 season, Coach Hayes was selected as the head men's and women's swimming coach at Saint Joseph’s College. Coach Hayes made an immediate impact on the program and has helped the team make strides towards regional prominence in each of his five seasons to date.

Under his watch, the Monks have shown improvement across the board while the majority of team records have drastically been improved upon. During his tenure, the team has garnered numerous GNAC Conference Rookie and Swimmer of the Week honors, a pair of GNAC Rookie of the Year honorees, multiple GNAC All-Tournament selections, eight All-New England Selections, two CSCAA Team Scholar All-America honors, an NEISDA Team Sportsmanship Award (2012 Steve Looke Award) and a GNAC Coach of the year accolade (2012).

Coach Hayes began his career coaching the Deering High School boys swim team, first as an assistant from 1996 to 1998 and then as head coach from 1998-2005. As head coach of the Rams, his teams posted a 44-8-1 record and won 3 straight Maine Class A State Championships (2003, 2004, 2005). He was awarded Coach of the Year honors from the Maine Swim League (2003), Portland Press Herald (2003) and the Southern Maine Swim Officials (2003, 2004)

In 2005, Coach Hayes decided to move up to the collegiate level and served as the assistant swim coach for the University of New England. Here he helped coach a fast growing, new program from 2005 to 2007. These teams featured multiple NEISDA Championship swimmers and served as proof his approach and background could work at the next level.

Coach Hayes' approach has always been to try and get better. Whether that is year to year, month to month, week to week; the goal is always focused on growth.

Coach Hayes is a native of Portland, Maine and a 1996 graduate of Deering High School.  He has studied Health Fitness at the University of Southern Maine and lives in Portland with his wife, Owen.
