POULTNEY, VT - After trailing 7-4 early in the
second stanza against Green Mountain (1-11, 0-9 NAC), Saint
Joseph's (4-12, 2-7) went on to score 11 unanswered goals to close
out the contest and collect a 15-7 conference victory.
Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) and
Jonathan Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA)
scored four goals apiece and Ryan
Prescott '09 (Pittsfield, NH) collected 10 ground
balls in the triumph.
Max Talsky '09 (Hanover, NH) scored four goals and added an assist
to lead the Eagles and Edgar Vigil '11 (Marlborough, MA) tallied a
goal and two assists in the loss. Keeper Keith Drinkwine '09
(Selkirk, NY) made 12 stops in net.
Horgan ignited the game scoring 3:26 into the first quarter with an unassisted goal, but the Eagles, led by three goals from Talsky, opened up a 5-1 lead with five unanswered goals in the next 25 minutes of play. Dolewa , Horgan and Prescott countered a goal from Eagles midi Thomas Wheeler '10 (Seattle, WA) to complete the first half scoring as the hosts took a 6-4 lead into the intermission.
Talsky scored the first goal of the half, off a Vigil helper, to make it a 7-4 game. The three-goal advantage would be the last for the Eagles, however, as Dolewa scored twice and Kody Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) added another in the following five minutes to knot the game at seven apiece. Prescott scored the eventual game winning goal, off a Tokunbo Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) dish with 8:24 to play in the third quarter, as part of the 11 goal run that saw the visitors seal a playoff berth-clinching victory.
With the win, Saint Joseph's earned the eighth and
final seed in the NAC playoffs and will play in the program's first
conference playoff game, as a first-year member of the North
Atlantic Conference, on Saturday at top-seeded Castleton State
College (9-5, 9-0 NAC). Game time will be announced shortly.
St. Joe's outshot Green Mountain 62-31, with the tally being a new
single-game record for the Monks, and picked up 31 groundballs
opposed to the 22 corralled by the Eagles. The Monks also won 17 of
24 faceoff attempts in the victory.
Peckham scored three goals and added an assist to go with five ground balls, Amosun recorded a career-high four assists, and Luke LaFreniere '10 (Alton, NH) chipped in with a pair of goals and a helper. Prescott found the back of the net twice and SJC keeper Don Gearan '12 (Gorham, ME) made five saves in the win.
Nearly all individual single-season records for the second-year program have fallen this spring. Horgan has set new marks for goals (41), assists (16) and points (57), and Dolewa has already obliterated the mark for shots with 135 in his rookie campaign. Prescott has achieved a new single-season record for ground balls with 60 and Elliot LaMarre '11 (Raymond, ME) has utilized his quickness to win 56.3% (89-158) of his faceoff attempts, which is on pace to become a new season best.
