Saint Joseph's Defeats Emmanuel in Regular Season Finale, 15-7

STANDISH, Maine – Grad student Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) netted seven goals and senior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) broke the Monks' career points record to help Saint Joseph's College (10-7, 7-3 GNAC) defeat Emmanuel College (5-11, 5-5 GNAC), 15-7, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

BROKEN RECORDS:

With his first goal of the evening scored at the 11:30 mark of the fourth quarter, Goodfellow surpassed Michael Finn '19 to become the Monks' all-time points leader. The senior attack started today's contest with 208 career points, two shy of Finn's mark of 210, and tied the total with an assist on Michaud's fourth goal of the night (6:05, third quarter). Goodfellow capped the contest with two goals and three assists and now has 213 points (109G, 104A) in just 49 career games. Finn tallied 210 points (169G, 41A) in 67 games over four seasons.

Goodfellow, who entered the game tied for the Monks' career assists record (101, Puleo '21), became the program's all-time leader in helpers with the dime on a Tiger Hopkins (Leeds, Maine) tally with 7:18 left in the second quarter.

Michaud also broke a record in the victory: his own single-season goals mark. Last spring Michaud scored 52 goals and, with his fifth tally of the contest scored at the 6:05 mark of the third period, eclipsed the mark. The standout grad has 55 goals through 17 games this spring.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Emmanuel secured the first lead of the game when Cole Cloney (Medfield, Mass.) hit pay dirt at the 8:20 mark of the first quarter. Michaud tied the tilt 22 seconds later as the Monks netted five of the next six goals to stake a 4-2 advantage with 14:45 left in the second stanza.

Saint Joseph's held a 7-4 lead at intermission and held all the momentum after posting a 6-1 run during the third quarter and first 10-plus minutes of the final frame. Freshman Joseph Kiedaisch (Westminster, Mass.) closed out the surge with a shot, taken from behind the net, that deflected off the back of Emmanuel keeper Eric Anderson (Sparta, N.J.) and into the cage, lifting the Monks to a 13-5 cushion with 4:43 remaining.

The conference rivals swapped scores during the closing minutes to account for the 15-7 final.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held the lead in shots (49-47) and face-off wins (14-10) while the Saints registered advantages in ground balls (38-37) and caused turnovers (12-10). Both teams steered 28 shots on goal in what was the 2024 regular season finale for both teams.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshman Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) was brilliant in the victory with 21 saves, a career-high and the most by a St. Joe's goalie since current assistant coach Brannon Gilbert '23 steered away 24 shots versus Bates College on March 20th, 2021.
