Emerson Topples Saint Joseph's, 23-10

BOSTON, Mass. – Emerson College (2-2) defeated Saint Joseph's College (1-1), 23-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The former conference rivals stood at a 3-3 tie after grad Nathaniel Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) scored off a Matt Denman (Brentwood, N.H.) assist with 4:44 left in the first quarter, but the Lions outscored the Monks by a 9-3 tally during the following 13 minutes of game play. Jack Burns scored twice in a matter of 11 seconds to cap the surge with the hosts holding a 12-6 lead and 6:53 left in the second stanza.

Emerson held a 13-7 lead going into intermission and dominated the last two quarters to the tune of a 10-3 score, including four straight goals to end the game.

TEAM STATS:

Emerson held the lead in shots (40-39), shots on goal (32-20), ground balls (45-30), and caused turnovers (13-9) while Saint Joseph's posted a 21-16 advantage in face-offs.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) made three saves and allowed 17 goals in 37:12 between the pipes while freshman Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) made three stops and yielded four goals in 14:13 and first-year Nic Michaud (Wales, Maine) turned away three shots and gave up two goals in 8:35 of mop-up duty.

For Emerson, Malcom McGrath, Connor Nydegger, Elijah Turbow, and Ethan Corby combined to make 10 saves in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Denman scored two goals with a pair of assists
  • Senior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) netted a pair of goals with an assist
  • Grad Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) tallied a goal and two assists
  • Girardin and sophomore David Cook (Upton, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece
  • Freshman Cameron Leeds (Derry, N.H.) scored a goal and added three ground balls and three caused turnovers
  • Freshman Zander Kirk (Bath, Maine) won 13-of-19 face-off attempts and picked up four ground balls
  • Freshman Nathan Nelson (Henniker, N.H.) and junior Tyler Moscato (West Haven, Conn.) both scored in the setback

LEADERS – EMERSON:

  • Burns scored seven goals with three assists and three ground balls
  • Birk Swan tallied five goals, five assists, and two ground balls
  • Nicholas Fulgione added two goals and three assists
  • Pierce Eldredge scored three times and added a pair of assists with two ground balls
  • Quinn Gardiner won 16-of-37 face-off bids and picked up five ground balls

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-4 in the history of the series with Emerson College.
