Eagles Sneak Past Monks, 15-12

PORTLAND, ME - Saint Joseph's (2-4, 0-3 NAC) held a 9-7 lead over Husson University (3-2, 2-1) going into the intermission, but the Eagles outscored the Monks 8-3 in the second half to secure a 15-12 conference victory at Deering Memorial Field on Monday evening. Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) led St. Joe's offensively with five goals and an assist in the losing effort.

Husson got on the board first with a goal from Kyle Dwyer '12 (Brunswick, ME) at the 13:36 mark, but Kody Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME), Dolewa and Jonathan Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA) all found the back of the Eagles net in the subsequent three minutes to lift the Royal Blue to a 3-1 lead. The teams swapped goals twice before the first quarter came to a close, when the Monks held a 5-3 advantage.

Ryan Prescott '09 (Pittsfield, NH) opened the second stanza scoring with a goal 5:53 into the period to put the Monks up 6-3. Husson countered with goals from Dwyer and Anthony Diaz '12 (Brunswick, ME) in the next 1:10 of play to cut the deficit to 6-5. With a pair of goals from Dolewa and another from Luke LaFreniere '10 (Alton, NH) in the final eight minutes of the half, the SJC lead stood at 9-7 going into the break.

With three goals, two from Dwyer, in the first 3:20 of the second half, the Eagles captured their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. Dolewa tied the game with his fourth tally of the game at 11:23 of the third quarter to tie the game at 10-apiece, and Horgan added his second of the night four minutes later to put his team up by one.

For Husson, a Nick Brown '12 (Sabattus, ME) score brought the game back to a draw 33 seconds later and Ben Landry '12 (Lewiston, ME) snuck a goal past SJC keeper Nick Hannon '09 (Windham, ME) with 3:56 to play in the third to put his team back on top, 12-11. Hannon was replaced in net by Don Gearan '12 (Gorham, ME) after the Landry tally.

Six minutes elapsed before Dolewa scored his second man-up goal of the game, knotting the contest at 12-apiece with 13:09 left in regulation. Unfortunately for the Monks, the Eagles went on to score three unanswered goals to close out the conference contest on top, 15-12.

For the Monks, Peckham notched two goals and an assist, Horgan scored twice, Prescott added a goal and a helper, and Blake Edwards '11 (Glide, OR) and LaFreniere each chipped in with a goal. Tokunbo Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) and Horgan both gathered five groundballs in the loss. Hannon made nine saves in net, while Gearan was able to coral three Husson shots.

Horgan and Dolewa, with 16 goals apiece through six games, have broken Peckham's single-season mark of 14 goals, which was set in the program's inaugural season last year.

For Husson, Dwyer had four goals and Sam Smith '12 (Rockport, ME), Landry and Diaz all netted three markers in the victory. Goalkeeper Matt Linnell '12 (Albion, ME) made 14 saves to record the victory in net.

Saint Joseph's will host UMass-Boston on Thursday, April 2nd at 7:15 PM at Deering Memorial Field.
