PORTLAND, ME - Saint Joseph's (2-4, 0-3 NAC) held a
9-7 lead over Husson University (3-2, 2-1) going into the
intermission, but the Eagles outscored the Monks 8-3 in the second
half to secure a 15-12 conference victory at Deering Memorial Field
on Monday evening. Paul Dolewa
'12 (Saco, ME) led St. Joe's offensively with five goals and an
assist in the losing effort.
Husson got on the board first with a goal from Kyle Dwyer '12
(Brunswick, ME) at the 13:36 mark, but Kody
Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME),
Dolewa and Jonathan
Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA) all found the back of the
Eagles net in the subsequent three minutes to lift the Royal Blue
to a 3-1 lead. The teams swapped goals twice before the first
quarter came to a close, when the Monks held a 5-3 advantage.
Ryan Prescott '09 (Pittsfield,
NH) opened the second stanza scoring with a goal 5:53 into the
period to put the Monks up 6-3. Husson countered with goals from
Dwyer and Anthony Diaz '12 (Brunswick, ME) in the next 1:10 of play
to cut the deficit to 6-5. With a pair of goals from
Dolewa and another from Luke
LaFreniere '10 (Alton, NH) in the final eight
minutes of the half, the SJC lead stood at 9-7 going into the
break.
With three goals, two from Dwyer, in the first 3:20 of the second
half, the Eagles captured their first lead since the opening
minutes of the contest. Dolewa tied the game with
his fourth tally of the game at 11:23 of the third quarter to tie
the game at 10-apiece, and Horgan added his second
of the night four minutes later to put his team up by one.
For Husson, a Nick Brown '12 (Sabattus, ME) score brought the game
back to a draw 33 seconds later and Ben Landry '12 (Lewiston, ME)
snuck a goal past SJC keeper Nick
Hannon '09 (Windham, ME) with 3:56 to play in the
third to put his team back on top, 12-11. Hannon
was replaced in net by Don Gearan
'12 (Gorham, ME) after the Landry tally.
Six minutes elapsed before Dolewa scored his
second man-up goal of the game, knotting the contest at 12-apiece
with 13:09 left in regulation. Unfortunately for the Monks, the
Eagles went on to score three unanswered goals to close out the
conference contest on top, 15-12.
For the Monks, Peckham notched two goals and an
assist, Horgan scored twice,
Prescott added a goal and a helper, and
Blake Edwards '11 (Glide, OR) and
LaFreniere each chipped in with a goal.
Tokunbo Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME)
and Horgan both gathered five groundballs in the loss.
Hannon made nine saves in net, while
Gearan was able to coral three Husson shots.
Horgan and Dolewa, with 16 goals
apiece through six games, have broken Peckham's
single-season mark of 14 goals, which was set in the program's
inaugural season last year.
For Husson, Dwyer had four goals and Sam Smith '12 (Rockport, ME),
Landry and Diaz all netted three markers in the victory. Goalkeeper
Matt Linnell '12 (Albion, ME) made 14 saves to record the victory
in net.
Saint Joseph's will host UMass-Boston on Thursday, April 2nd at
7:15 PM at Deering Memorial Field.
