PORTLAND, ME - UMass-Boston (1-3) defeated Saint
Joseph's (2-5), 15-4, in a game called by the officials with 11:51
remaining due to thick fog. The physical battle between the Monks
and Beacons stood at a 4-4 deadlock after Jonathan
Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA) scored a man-up goal 14
seconds into the second quarter, but the visitors proceeded to
rattle off 11 unanswered goals to collect their first win of the
season. Horgan and Kody
Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) both scored two
goals in the loss.
John Canty '11 (Milton, MA) scored his first of four goals to kick
off the scoring 2:51 into the game. Jared Doherty '10 (Conway, NH)
and Roman Ricci '11 (Duxbury, MA) added tallies before
Peckham notched a man-up goal with 4:38 to go in
the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Horgan beat Beacons keeper Anthony Fitti '12 (Havertown, PA) a
minute later and Peckham scored again with 2:14
left in the first to knot the game at three apiece. Aaron Pollock
'12 (Belmont, MA) put the Beacons back on top with a marker at the
1:12 mark.
Unfortunately for the Monks, Horgan's game-tying
man-up goal, off a Tokunbo Amosun
'11 (Gardiner, ME) pass, was the last time they would find the back
of the net against UMass-Boston. The Beacons quickly regained the
advantage with two goals just eight seconds apart, the latter
coming from Canty at the 11:28 mark. The victors added three more
scores in the second to take a 9-4 lead into halftime, and netted
six in the third to take control of the game.
The Beacons held a commanding 45-22 advantage in shots and won the
face-off battle 14-6. Thirty-three of the visitor's attempts found
the net, while the Monks steered 15 shots on goal. Both teams
recorded 26 ground balls.
For the Monks, Horgan corralled a game-high seven
ground balls and added an assist, Amosun had five
groundballs and an assist and Paul
Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) added a helper in the losing
effort. Starting goalkeeper Don
Gearan '12 (Gorham, ME) made 13 saves and
Nick Hannon '09 (Windham, ME)
posted six stops in 18:24 of play.
Canty talled four goals and an assist and won four face-offs in six
attempts for the Beacons. Al Craven '10 (Milton, MA) scored three
goals, Pollock notched two goals and two assists, and Doherty and
Dale Nunn '10 (Hillsborough, NJ) both netted a pair of goals in the
win. Starting goalie Anthony Fitti made seven saves and Matt Gradin
'11 (Milton, MA) made four saves in 18:09 of relief.
Saint Joseph's will host College of Mount Saint Vincent (NY) on
Saturday in a 12:45 PM start at Deering Memorial Field.
