STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (0-1, 0-1
NAC) erased a three-goal deficit by netting three goals in a minute
of play, tying the game 7-7 halfway through the fourth, but a
shorthanded goal by Thomas College (1-1, 1-0 NAC) with 2:04
remaining dashed the Monks' hopes of winning their first-ever
conference contest. Paul Dolewa
'12 (Saco, ME) recorded 17 shots, a new program single-game record,
and had three goals and one assist in the 9-8 loss.
On two occasions, St. Joe's trailed by a trio of goals only to net
three consecutive tallies to tie the game. Unfortunately for the
Royal Blue and their followers, a shorthanded goal by Thomas
midfielder Jeremy Parmley '11 (Eliot, ME) with 2:04 remaining sank
the Monks' bid to collect a season-opening victory in a hard-fought
North Atlantic Conference contest.
Kolby Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) scored 4:22 into the
conference contest and Parmley netted a pair of goals to give the
Terriers a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Monks countered with three unanswered tallies in the second
stanza to knot the game at 3-3. Dolewa scored
back-to-back goals, the first coming off a
Jonathan Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA)
pass, within 52 seconds and Kody
Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) collected a man-up
goal off a Dolewa dish with 2:11 before
intermission.
Kolby Peckham scored and assisted on a goal by Mitch Bickford to
lift Thomas to a 5-3 advantage with over three minutes to play in
the third period. Elliot LaMarre
'11 (Raymond, ME) scored his first marker of the year, a man-up
goal, two minutes later to cut the deficit in half, but Luke
Collier '11 (Sidney, ME) put the Terriers back up by a pair with a
goal 20 seconds later to close out the quarter.
Parmley blasted his third goal of the game just 24 seconds into the
fourth to give his outfit a 7-4 lead, but, for the second time in
the game, the Monks scored three straight goals to knot the score.
Benson Pasquarello '12
(Kennebunk, ME) started the surge with his first collegiate goal
off a Blake Edwards '11 (Glide,
OR) pass with 7:50 left and Horgan netted a marker
with a man advantage, off a Tokunbo
Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) assist, 29 seconds
later. Kody Peckham took a pass
from Horgan and blasted a shot past Thomas keeper
Josh Colello '11 (Yarmouth, ME) to tie the game at seven-apiece at
the 6:48 mark.
Terriers midfielder Kolby Peckham and Dolewa
swapped scored in the next two minutes of play, as the game
remained tied, 8-8, with 4:54 remaining. Collier was called for a
slashing penalty with 2:49 remaining, giving the Monks a one-minute
man-up opportunity. After a scramble at midfield Parmley picked up
a loose ball, raced to the SJC net, and fired a shot past Monks
keeper Marco Stefano '12 (Steep
Falls, ME) to record a shorthanded goal with 2:04 left. St. Joe's
had one last man-advantage opportunity, as Josh Morneault '10
(Jefferson, ME) received an interference penalty with 47 seconds
left, but the Monks were unable to capitalize.
LaMarre won 15 of 20 face-off attempts, giving the
Monks a clear advantage starting play, and St. Joe's was 3-6 on
extra-man opportunities, while posting a 21-29 clearing effort, in
the loss. The Terriers held a slight edge in shots, 39-38, and
groundballs, 33-31.
For St. Joe's, Kody Peckham
scored two goals, Horgan had a goal and two
assists, Edwards recorded a pair of helpers and
Stefano, making his first NCAA start, made nine
saves in net. Amosun paced the Monks with five
groundballs.
For Thomas, Parmley led the way with four goals and an assist and
Kolby Peckham had three goals and an assist. Colello made 11 stops
to notch his first win of the season between the pipes.
Saint Joseph's will play in-state rival Southern Maine on Wednesday
at Deering Memorial Field in Portland. Opening faceoff is set for
4:00 PM.
