Monks Top Eagles, 14-4

PORTLAND, ME - The Saint Joseph's Men's Lacrosse team improved to 3-2 with a 14-4 victory over non-conference opponent Daniel Webster College (0-1) at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) and Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) both netted three goals and Monks keeper Marco Stefano '12 (Steep Falls, ME) made six saves in the triumph.

Dylan Chase ’13 (West Newbury, MA) added two goals and two assists and Elliot LaMarre ’11 (Raymond, ME) tallied two goals, an assist and 11 face-off wins for the Monks. Gregory Lambert ’13 (Alexandria, VA), Sean Flanagan ’13 (Hingham, MA), Kody Peckham ’11 (West Gardiner, ME) and Tookie Amosun ’11 (Gardiner, ME) all scored goals for the Royal Blue.

For Lambert, the goal was the first of his collegiate career. The freshman midfielder scored with 2:25 left in the second quarter off a pass from fellow freshman Alexander Stone (Lewiston, ME).

The Eagles held a 3-1 lead in the early going, but the Monks rattled off 13 unanswered goals over the final 33 minutes en route to the 14-4 victory.

The only goal of the first quarter was scored by Eagles’ sophomore attacker Justin Chiulli (Saugus, MA) just 15 seconds into the game. Daniel Webster doubled its lead at the 11:20 mark of the second stanza when Shane Devaney ’13 (Merrimack, NH) defeated Stefano off a Parker Condit ’11 (Blairstown, NJ) dish.

Hunt put the Monks on the board with a tally two minutes later off a Chase assist, but the Eagles were able to maintain the two-goal cushion with a goal from Alex McKenzie ’12 (Nashua, NH) at the 4:40 mark. Lambert’s marker with 2:25 remaining in the second quarter cut the visitor’s lead to 3-2.

The halftime conversation must have sparked the Monks’ efforts, at the Royal Blue tied the game just 13 seconds into the third period off a Chase goal. When the third quarter came to a close, St. Joe’s held an 8-3 advantage, as Dolewa recorded all three of his goals during the third frame to help the Royal Blue build the lead.

Saint Joseph’s maintained the dominating pace with six straight scores in the fourth stanza, as LaMarre, Peckham, Flanagan, Hunt, Chase and Amosun all were able to beat Eagles keeper Tommy Driscoll ’12 (South Boston, MA) in the closing period. SJC freshman Jack LaFreniere (Alton, NH) recorded his first NCAA point with an assist on the Chase goal at the 4:50 mark.

St. Joe’s held an advantage in shots (52-16), groundballs (52-22) and face-offs (14-8) in the victory.

The Monks will host University of Southern Maine at Deering Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, March 24th at 6:00 PM.
