Spartans Roll Past Monks, 16-7

STANDISH, ME – Castleton State College (9-5, 7-1 NAC) topped Saint Joseph's (7-7, 3-4 NAC), 16-7, in a North Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse contest at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon. Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) and Sean Flanagan '13 (Hingham, MA) both tallied a goal and an assist in the SJC loss.

Castleton was led offensively by Nohea King '13 (St. Albans, VT), who registered four goals and an assist, in the conference victory. Korey Counos '10 (St. Albans, VT) and Samuel Bailey '12 (Hartford, VT) both netted three goals and an assist for the Spartans, who were perfect, 6-6, on man-up opportunities against the Monks, including four straight man-up goals in the opening four minutes of play.

St. Joe's netminder Marco Stefano '12 (Steep Falls, ME) made nine stops for the hosts, while Castleton keeper David DeGhetto '12 (Clifton, NJ) posted eight saves for the visitors.

Bailey kicked off the game scoring just six seconds after the opening whistle, as Craig MacDerment '11 (Clifton Park, NY) won the opening face-off and fed the junior, who fired a shot past Stefano to give his team a 1-0 cushion before most fans had a chance to settle in for the game.

The Spartans went on to tally four straight man-up goals after Elliot LaMarre '11 (Raymond, ME) committed a non-releasing unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the 13:34 mark. Daniel Luzzi '10 (Oakland, NJ) made it a 6-0 game with a tally, off a Kenneth Bourneuf '13 (Waterbury, CT) at the 8:19 mark.

Benson Pasquarello '12 (Kennebunk, ME) put the Monks on the board with a man-up goal off a Hunt dish with seven minutes left in the first quarter, but Castleton answered with goals from Jeremy Peyton '11 (Montpelier, VT) and Counos to close out the opening stanza with an 8-1 advantage.

Blake Edwards '11 (Glide, OR) cut the SJC deficit to 8-2 with a goal, assisted by Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME), two minutes into the second quarter, but it would be the Monks' only score of the period as Castleton scored three times before intermission began to carry an 11-2 lead into the break.

Luke LaFreniere '10 (Alton, NH) and Tookie Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) scored two quick goals to open the second half to make it an 11-4 game. King scored for Castleton at the 9:15 mark and Hunt answered with an SJC tally 40 seconds later, cutting the visitors' lead to 12-5.

Any hopes of a Monks' comeback effort were dashed when the Spartans netted four unanswered goals, including two of the man-down variety, to close out the third quarter with a 16-5 advantage.

Kody Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) and Flanagan both scored goals in the waning minutes of the fourth for the Monks, making the final score 16-7, Spartans.

MacDerment collected a game-high 12 groundballs and won 13 of 19 (68%) of his face-off attempts in the victory. LaMarre paced the Monks with six groundballs and was 5-12 on his face-off bids.

Castleton held advantages in shots (42-24), groundballs (47-32), face-offs (14-12) and clear success (89%-67%) in the NAC triumph. St. Joe's was just 1-13 on man-up opportunities in the loss.

St. Joe's will play at Lyndon State tomorrow in a North Atlantic Conference contest at 2:00 PM, while Castleton will host Lyndon on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
