Mules Surge Past Monks, 15-6

STANDISH, Maine – Colby College (3-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (1-7), 15-6, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The pair of Maine private institutions essentially swapped scores in the first quarter, as sophomore Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) netted an unassisted tally with 49 seconds left in the opening frame to make it a 4-3 game heading into the second stanza.

The Mules came out firing in the second stanza however and changed the complexion of the contest by potting nine of the following 10 goals. Ryan Darby capped the Mules' scoring outbreak at the 2:00 mark of the third period with the visitors holding a 13-4 advantage.

The Monks countered with goals from Zavier Balzano (Otisfield, Maine) and Goodfellow to cut their deficit down to 13-6 with 11:06 left in the fourth, but Colby immediately scored off the faceoff following the latter SJC score and completed the scoring ledger with a Jack Rickards marker with 10:23 left.

TEAM STATS:

Colby posted leads in shots (56-30), shots on goal (34-14), ground balls (49-26), caused turnovers (8-4), and faceoffs (22-3) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Michael Janocha (Southampton, Mass.) was solid with 19 saves in the loss while Colby netminders Matt Suffredini and Will Rickards combined to make eight saves on the evening.

  • Matt Stein contributed a goal, three assists, and three ground balls
