Johnson & Wales Tops Saint Joseph’s, 14-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (6-4, 3-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (2-8, 0-3 GNAC), 14-5, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sophomore Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) opened the game scoring to give the Monks a 1-0 with 12:57 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats closed out the opening frame with three straight tallies and headed into intermission with a 9-3 advantage.

Freshman Calvin Heline (Amesbury, Mass.) and junior Zavier Balzano (Otisfield, Maine) scored the first two goals of the second half to make it a 9-5 game with 10:49 left in the third period, but Johnson & Wales ended the conference contest with five unanswered markers to pick up the 14-5 win.

TEAM STATS:

Johnson & Wales held the lead in shots (41-25), shots on goal (26-17), ground balls (30-18) and face-off wins (18-4).

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior starter Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) made eight saves in 45 minutes and freshman Ryan Boutiette (Burrillville, R.I.) posted four stops in 15 minutes of relief. JWU netminders Trent Madigan and Chris April split the game and made six saves apiece.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Balzano and LeBlanc notched a goal and an assist apiece
  • Goodfellow added a goal and three ground balls
  • Freshman Anthony Samiotes picked up four ground balls and two caused turnovers

LEADERS – JOHNSON & WALES:

  • Donny McInnis and Joe McIntyre scored four goals apiece
  • Tyler Drago scored a goal and dealt five assists
  • Mike Catuosco was 17-for-20 on face-off attempts with 17 ground balls and seven caused turnovers
