Men's Swimming Collects Historic Victory

CHICOPEE, MA – The Saint Joseph's College men's swim team notched the first victory in program history with a 127-111 triumph over Elms College on Saturday afternoon. The Monks notched wins in seven different events, including victories in both relay races, en route to the historic conquest.

Freshman Chris Cullity (North Reading, Mass.) recorded a pair of victories and swam a leg for the winning 200-Free relay squad and Adam Gaulin '14 (Belfast, Maine) posted two top finishes and a runner-up effort on the afternoon. Gaulin also competed as a member of the top-finishing SJC 200-Medley relay team.

Cullity posted a 9:47.43 time to win the 800-Free and later registered a 4:46.72 performance to top the field in the 400-Free. Gaulin won the 100-Breast (1:16.00) and 50-Breast (34.29) events and placed second in the 100-IM (1:09.83) to notch a team-high 22 points versus the Blazers.

John Holmes '15 (Norwood, Mass.) was victorious in the 50-Free (25.82) and was the runner-up in the 100-Free (1:02.21) event while Kevin Towne '12 (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed 12 individual points after placing second in the 200-Back (2:33.88), 50-Back (31.33) and 50-Fly (30.44).

Antonio Delvecchio '15 (Middlebury, Conn.) captured a runner-up finish in the 200-Free (2:13.47) and swam legs for both SJC relay teams.

Thomas Smith '14 (New Hartford, Conn.), Gaulin, Delvecchio and Holmes combined to record a 1:59.08 effort in the 200-Medley relay while Delvecchio, Smith, Cullity and Holmes put up a 1:48.56 effort to win the 200-Free relay.

The SJC men's swim team has performed better every year since joining the varsity ranks in the winter of 2007-08 and came within one point of the programs first win in the 2011 regular-season finale against Gordon College. Prior to this afternoon, the Monks had gone 0-14 over four years.

Saint Joseph's will host Regis College in the 2011-12 home-opener next Saturday at 2:00 PM.

The Elms College pool is 25 meters long, not the typical 25 yards, so today's times may seem a bit skewed. In the Monks' third appearance in the Elms water, the team set 12 individual or relay meter times records:
