Men Cruise Past Husson, 123-71

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College defeated Husson University, 123-71, in head-to-head men's swimming action at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.

The 200-Medley relay team, consisting of Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.), Thomas Smith (New Hartford, Conn.), Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) and Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine), set the tone for the Monks early with 1:49.23 to win the event by over 10 seconds.

Johnson shattered the program record – formerly held by Adam Gaulin – by over 16 seconds with a win in the 200-Fly (2:14.00) and also won the 200-Breast (2:33.73) while sophomore Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) won the 100-Breast (1:09.40) and 100-Fly (58.00) events and was second in the 200-Breast (2:36.05)

Smith won the 200-Free (2:00.31) and finished second in the 100-Free (56.98) and Bowden was the top finisher in the 100-Back (1:01.07) along with a second-place effort in the 200-Back (2:25.19) race.

Senior Stewart Emery (Augusta, Maine) earned his first NCAA victory with a 2:15.96 time in the 200-Back and posted a runner-up finish in the 100-Breast (1:15.93)

Junior Chris Cullity (North Reading, Mass.) won the 500-Free (5:37.33) by over two-and-a-half minutes and Merlino placed second in the 100-Back (1:05.00) and 50-Free (25.90) competitions.

Saint Joseph's is off until December 7th when the team competes in the two-day GNAC Championship at Simmons College.
