2016 NEISDA Championships: Day Two Recap

KINGSTON, R.I. – Saint Joseph's College capped the second day of the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday evening. The SJC men are currently in 11th place with 116 points and the women are 18th with 95 points.

On the men's side, a pair of records fell, including the Monks' 50-Fly mark which was actually broken three times, twice in the prelims and once and for all in the finals, when senior Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) put his name on the board with a 25.07 time, shattering the previous mark (25:30), which was set by junior Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) in the conference championship in December.

Earlier in the day, Johnson bested Merlino in the 50-Fly prelims, as the former notched a 25.19 effort and the latter logged a 25.26 time. Johnson finished eighth in the finals with a 25.32 performance.

The second men's record was set in the 800-Free relay, as Johnson, freshman Zack Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine), Merlino, and senior Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) finished ninth with a 7:45.38 effort, which topped the time (7:46.32) set by Chris Cullity, Adam Gaulin, Thomas Smith, and Antonio Delvecchio in the 2012 NEISDA Championships.

As for the women's leaderboard through 34 events, Roger Williams University (1,000 points) clings to a narrow lead over Keene State College (918) with GNAC competitor Simmons College safely in third with 742 points.

The top three teams on the men's side are fairly entrenched, as Keene State College (561) is comfortably in first with Roger Williams (432.5) in second and GNAC rival Norwich University (383.5) in third place.

The final day of the three-day NEISDA Championship kicks off Sunday with the preliminary swims at 10:00 AM and the finals beginning at 5:30 PM. Follow all the action here: http://www.bsubears.com/sports/mswimdive/neisdachamps/championships16
