Johnson Set to Compete at ECAC Championship, Make Program History

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Josephs' College junior Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) will be the first Monks swimmer to compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships after posting a qualifying time in the 100-Fly last weekend.

On Saturday evening, Johnson registered a 54.45 effort in a 100-Fly time trial at the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, a three-day event which was held at University of Rhode Island February 12-14.

His performance in the time trial met the ECAC 100-Fly cut time (54.52), thus affording Johnson – and first-year Head Coach Margaret Howe - a trip to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where the 2016 ECAC DIII Championship will be held at Lejeune Hall starting on Friday, February 26th and ending on Sunday the 28th.

The 100-Fly event will take place on Saturday, February 27th, starting with the trials at 10:00 AM and concluding with the finals at 6:00 PM. The 100-Fly is the sixth prelim in the morning and the seventh finals event in the evening.

Over three collegiate seasons, Johnson has competed in 104 individual events with 33 victories – the second-most in program history – and currently owns the team records in the 200-Fly (2:03.24), 100-Fly (54.45), 200-IM (2:09.89), and 100-IM (58.57). He has also swum legs for two of the Monks' record relay quartets – the 200-Free (1:32.52) and 800-Free (7:45.38) events.
