NORTHFIELD, VT - Norwich University (9-15, 8-8 GNAC) swept both
ends of its Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader versus
Saint Joseph's (17-9, 9-5) on Friday afternoon. The Cadets won both
games in the late innings, posting a 6-5 win in the opening game
before rallying for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, ME)
was 7-8 with two doubles and three RBI's on the day and
Alysn Ludwig '09 (Waldoboro, ME)
went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI in the nightcap.
Samantha Gray '12 (Yarmouth, ME)
posted a 2-3 effort with a double and an RBI in the opener.
Kiera Walsh '11 (Benton, ME) took
the loss in game one and is now 6-3 on the year. The sophomore
hurler allowed 10 hits and five earned runs while fanning five in
defeat. Madylan Kluna '12
(Standish, ME) (5-5) suffered the game-two setback and allowed 10
hits, six earned runs and three walks while striking out three.
Norwich squandered a three-run seventh inning lead in the first
game before winning it in the bottom of the seventh on Jackie
Donahue's RBI single. Donahue finished the game 2-for-4 with two
runs batted in and one run scored. Whitney Grennon was 1-for-4 with
a double and two runs scored, while Kerri Ingraham went 2-for-3
with one run scored.
The Cadets appeared to be in control of the contest after scoring
four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to move in front 5-2 as
the game moved to the seventh. St. Joe's rallied to tie the game at
5-5 with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Then, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Grennon doubled
and Donahue drove her home to send the Cadets to the victory.
The second game featured some late inning drama as well as the
Cadets trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Norwich exploded
for four runs in the bottom of the seventh, though, to secure the
win. Lindsay Carey drove in the first run with an RBI single, and
Marley Balasco scored the game-tying run on a passed ball. Grennon
then stepped to the plate and belted her second home run of the
game to win it for the Cadets.
The Lady Monks started strong in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead
in the first inning after Ludwig led off with a
triple and scored on an error. Norwich snatched a 2-1 lead in the
bottom of the first on Grennon's first homer.
The visitors tied it at 2-2 in the third and moved in front 4-2 by
scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Grennon led Norwich at the plate, going 2-for-4 with those two home
runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Carey finished 2-for-3 with
one run batted in and one run scored.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, April 11, when the
Cadets host GNAC rival Simmons in a conference doubleheader. First
pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
