Saint Joseph's Takes Two from Regis, 5-1 & 1-0

WESTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (10-8, 2-0 GNAC) swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball non-divisional doubleheader at Regis College (4-10, 0-2 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Monks won the opener, 5-1 in eight innings, and completed the sweep with a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 5, REGIS 1:

After both teams went scoreless for six innings, Saint Joseph's put the first run on the board in the top of the seventh when freshman shortstop Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) doubled to center field and was driven in on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Abby Carpenter (Bath, Maine) to put the visitors on top by one.

The Pride battled back in the bottom of the seventh, starting with Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I.) reaching first on an error by the shortstop and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Ward (Webster, Mass.). With two outs, Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) singled to right field to score the runner from second and send the game into extra innings.

With runners on second and third in the top of the eighth, freshman Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) singled to right-center field to drive in a pair of runs and give the visitors a 3-1 lead. An RBI double by Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) and a runner scoring from third base on a wild pitch gave the Monks a 5-1 lead before Regis managed to get out of the inning.

IN THE CIRCLE:

SJC senior starter Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) pitched a complete game for the Monks, striking out nine batters while allowing only four hits and one earned run to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Regis starter Colby Butterfield (Gilford, N.H.) pitched all eight innings for the Pride, allowing only four hits and one earned run through seven innings while striking out three batters.

AT THE BAT:

For Saint Joseph's, Howe was 2-3 with a run, a double, and an RBI, Cloutier went 2-4 with a run and a two-bagger, and Tirrell added a single, a run, and two RBI in three at-bats.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 1, REGIS 0:

The Monks scored the game's lone run in the top of the fifth, when freshman Abbie Green-Sermak (Rehoboth, Mass.) led off with a walk and sprinted home on a Cloutier double.

IN THE CIRCLE:

SJC senior starter Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and a walk with five strikeouts to pick up her second victory of the season.

Regis starter Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I.) pitched a complete game for Regis, allowing seven hits and one earned run while recording a strikeout.

AT THE BAT:

For St. Joe's, Cloutier went 2-3 with a double and an RBI and sophomore third baseman Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) was 2-3.

For Regis, Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) and Andria Braga (Rehoboth, Mass.) both went 2-3 on the day.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the wins, Saint Joseph's remains undefeated (6-0) in the history of the series with Regis College.
