2013 Women's Lacrosse Season Review

STANDISH, ME - The Monks began the 2013 season looking to build upon an 8-6 record from the previous year under the watch of first-year coach Amanda Cahoon

The schedule began at Deering Memorial Stadium against Thomas College on February 26th, and the Monks appeared to be prepared for the competition, displaying their offensive potential in a 17-6 win over the Terriers.  Along with junior goalkeeper Haley Nason (Saco, Maine) breaking the program record by saving 18 shots on goal, the Monks also had ten different players find the back of the net, leading the Monks to the easy victory in game one.

On March 4th, the Monks again visited Derring Memorial Stadium in a matchup against rival Husson University.  The Monks sprang out of the gate again, scoring eight goals in a ten minute span in the 1st half, leading the way to another large win for Saint Joseph's, 17-3.  The Monks were led by three hat tricks by Cassie Diplock (Augusta, Maine), Macy Pagurko (Augusta, Maine), and Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, R.I.).  Junior Krystal Walsh (Springvale, Maine) tallied a pair of goals and three ground balls with two assists to boot.

Although the Monks dropped three of their next four matches, Diplock and junior co-captain Anneka Adame (San Diego, Calif.) continued to show leadership on offense, while Nason proved to be a mainstay at the goalkeeper position, finishing the season with 195 goals against, 157 saves, and a solid 44.60 save percentage.

After a rough week that saw the Monks go 1-3, they turned their attention to Mount Ida College, where Saint Joe's returned to their winning ways.  Pagurko scored four goals on just five shots, and Diplock added a hat trick to outlast the Mustangs 13-11 on March 21st.

Following the win over the Mustangs, the Monks went on to win six of their next eight games, including an 18-5 beating over Anna Maria on April 13th.

The final regular season game resulted in a 12-11 loss at Norwich University on April 20th, and the Monks concluded the regular season with a 10-6 (.611) record.  With their eyes now on the postseason, the Monks matched up against Emmanuel College in the GNAC Quarterfinal on April 24th.  Thanks to Nason's 15 saves and Diplock's five goals and nine ground balls, the #4 Monks secured their program's first ever postseason victory with a 17-9 win over the #5 Saints.

Two days later in the GNAC Semifinal game, the Monks were unable to hold down Lasell College's high-powered offense and fell to the Lasers, 21-10 in Newton, Mass.

The Monks finished the season with an 11-7 overall record, including 6-3 in conference play.  Only one graduating senior, co-captain Lauren Bailey (Hampton, N.H.), finished her collegiate career with three GNAC All-Academic honors, in 2011, 2012, and in her senior year, 2013.
