Monks Shoot Past Lasers, 14-7

NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) defeated Lasell University (2-2, 0-1 GNAC), 14-7, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's held a 3-0 lead after the first quarter when freshmen Dinah Wadleigh (Augusta, Maine) and Taylor Dumond (Minisink, N.Y.) both scored in a matter of two minutes midway through the frame and sophomore Celia Melanson (Waterford, Maine) found the back of the net at the 4:49 mark.

Teresa Kessner put the Lasers on the board at the 12:53 mark of the second quarter, but the Monks netted five of the following seven goals – including a pair from junior Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) – and headed into intermission with a comfortable 8-3 advantage.

The SJC defense pitched another 15-minute shutout while scoring four goals in the third period to take a 12-3 lead into the fourth frame. Lasell put up a fight in the final quarter and cut the St. Joe's cushion down to 13-7 after Kaitlin Bedell netted a man-down free-position marker with 4:20 left, but the Monks shut down the hosts for the remainder of the game and Dumond added her third tally of the day with 1:04 left to account for the 14-7 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (35-21), shots on goal (25-15), ground balls (26-21), draw controls (17-9), and caused turnovers (14-6) in the conference victory.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks deployed all three keepers today, as sophomore starter Alexis Eldridge (Effingham, N.H.) picked up the win after allowing three goals with six saves in the first half, junior Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) turned away one shot and gave up two scores in 19:10, and freshman Julia Price yielded two goals with one stop in 6:30.

Lasell netminder Joy Sayah made 11 saves in a complete game effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Siebert enjoyed another solid outing with three goals and four assists
  • Senior Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) tallied two goals, two assists, five draw controls, three caused turnovers, and seven ground balls
  • Dumond netted three goals on five shots with a pair of ground balls
  • Melanson chipped in with two goals and an assist with two ground balls
  • Senior Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) scored twice with two ground balls
  • Senior Heather Rohr (Merrimack, N.H.) picked up a career-high 10 draw controls

LEADERS – LASELL:

  • Bedell scored three goals with an assist and three ground balls
  • Kessner chipped in with three goals and an assist and three ground balls
  • Emily Watson added a goal and an assist

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory Saint Joseph's improves to 19-9 all-time versus Lasell University and has now defeated the Lasers in three consecutive meetings.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will continue traveling south with a game at Montclair State tomorrow at 12:00 PM, another contest at Holy Family on Wednesday, and a 4:00 PM game at Manhattanville on Thursday before returning home for a 2:00 PM GNAC home game versus Dean College next Saturday.
