PORTLAND, Maine – University of New England (1-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-1), 17-11, in what was the 2017 season-opener for both teams in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
As it played out, a sluggish start sank the Monks' chances as the Nor'easters opened the contest with nine unanswered goals in the first 16 minutes. Featuring many new faces this spring, the Saint Joseph's offense came together and, with the help of five unanswered strikes, outscored UNE by a 6-2 margin for the remainder of the first half and faced an 11-6 deficit at intermission.
Goals from Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) offset a Kasey Rubenstein (Somers, N.Y.) tally in the first six minutes of the second stanza to help the hosts make it a four-goal (12-8) game with 24:31 remaining. But the Nor'easters were able to stay a step ahead, as a pair of goals from Anna Stowell (Sutton, N.H.) in a matter of three minutes and a Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) strike at the 16:48 mark put the game out of reach.
THE KEEPERS:
- Saint Joseph's freshman Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made 13 saves in her first collegiate start
- UNE sophomore Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) stopped 13 shots in the winning effort
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Caiazzo netted four goals with an assist, six ground balls, and eight draw controls
- Sophomore Kara Kelly (York, Maine) tallied four goals
- Beaulieu registered two goals and a pair of assists
- Senior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) contributed a goal with six ground balls and six draw controls
- Sophomore Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) added six ground balls
- Freshman Micary Verville (Portland, Maine/Deering) chipped in with five ground balls and three caused turnovers
LEADERS – UNE:
- Sophomore Korinne Bohunsky (Eliot, Maine) enjoyed a productive night with four goals, two assists, four ground balls, eight draw controls, and four caused turnovers
- Stowell netted four goals with six total shots
- Sophomore Nichole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.) chipped in with three goals and a pair of ground balls
- Senior Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine) contributed a goal with five ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers
- Kelleher registered two goals and an assist
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 0-5 in the history of the series with University of New England. After suffering blowout setbacks in the first two meetings, the last three contests between the in-state rivals have been settled by six or fewer goals.

Both teams return to action Saturday, when the Monks travel to Husson University for a 12:00 PM start and the Nor'easters host Castleton University at 3:00 PM.
