STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) kicked off the 2018 women's lacrosse season with a 19-10 victory over Husson University (0-1) on a blustery Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks held a 3-2 lead 10 minutes into the contest before rattling off six unanswered goals, including back-to-back strikes from freshman attack Emily Ryan (Wakefield, Mass.) at the tail end of the surge to lift the hosts to a 9-2 advantage with 8:54 before the break.
Saint Joseph's led off the second half with a 5-1 run, as freshman attack Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) potted her first NCAA goal at the 16:47 mark to extend her team's lead to 14-4.
Husson threatened to jump back into the fray with three tallies in a matter of two minutes, as a Maddy Olsen (Phippsburg, Maine) goal at the 11:40 mark made it a 14-7 game but, following a time-out, Saint Joseph's regrouped and outscored the Eagles by a 5-3 margin in the closing 11 minutes to account for the 19-10 final.
OF NOTE: With her sixth goal of the game, scored with 12 seconds remaining, senior midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) tied the Monks' career goals record. She now has 210 career goals in just 56 games and is tied with Cassie Diplock '14, who netted the same amount in 64 contests.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's sophomore goalie Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made three saves to pick up her first victory of the 2018 season while her counterpart, freshman netminder Mallory Burchill (Kennebunk, Maine) registered nine stops in a losing effort.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Caiazzo scored six goals with one assist, 10 draw controls, six ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers
- Junior attack Kara Kelly (York, Maine) netted four goals – including the first women's lacrosse marker at the SJC Athletics Complex – with two ground balls
- Junior midfielder Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) added three goals and an assist with six ground balls, five draw controls, and three caused turnovers
- Sophomore midfielder Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) chipped in with two goals, two assists, and two ground balls
- Ryan scored twice in her first collegiate contest
LEADERS – HUSSON:
- Olsen paced the Eagles with four goals and added five draw controls
- Senior midfielder Amanda Deshaies (Wells, Maine) tallied three goals, six ground balls, three draw controls, and four caused turnovers
- Freshman attack Paige Daigle (Bath, Maine) netted two goals with an assist, three ground balls, and three draw controls
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-0-1 in the history of the series with Husson University. The Monks tipped the Eagles, 10-8, in Bangor last spring.

Saint Joseph's plays at Thomas College on Tuesday at 6:00 PM while Husson is off until next Thursday when the Eagles play at Mount Saint Mary (NY) in a 5:30 PM start.
