STANDISH, ME - First year player
Megan Willette (Waterville, ME) drilled a penalty
shot past keeper Laura Irwin (Randolph, MA) in the eighty-eighth
minute to secure a 6-5 St. Joe's victory over visiting Emmanuel
College.
Emmanuel (1-5) struck first with Jessica Steverman (Weymouth, MA)
scoring at 16:52. Senior Danielle McLaughlin
(Skowhegan, ME) answered back just 24 seconds later, netting a pass
from senior Kerri Driscoll (Surry, ME).
Erin Kelly (Springfield, MA) gave the Saints an edge as she scored
her first of three goals in the nineteenth minute. Willette took
back the lead for the Lady Monks in the next minute of play and
added to the lead with her second goal off an assist by junior
Karla Emerson (East Vassalboro, ME) at 29:56 to go
up 3-2.
First-year players Katie Jordan (Sandwich, MA) and
Caitlin Foley (Wilmington, MA) each added a goal
to give St. Joe's a 5-2 advantage in the first half. Melissa
Cromwell (Winchester, MA) started an Emmanuel comeback, scoring
with 58 seconds to go in the first half.
The Saints came out strong in the second half as Erin Kelly notched
two goals to even the match at 5-5. First-year Brittany
Roche (Amherst, NH) entered the game for St. Joe's with
just over fourteen minutes to play and recorded two saves in her
first intercollegiate contest as a goalkeeper. The half ended with
St. Joe's (4-2) capitalizing on the penalty kick during the last
three minutes of regulation.
St. Joe's plays next at Maine-Farmington on Sept. 28 at 4:00 PM.
