NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite trimming the deficit to one goal down the stretch, the Mitchell College women's soccer team was unable to complete the comeback, falling 4-2 in a GNAC matchup with Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) notched a goal for the third consecutive game for the Mariners, while freshman Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) scored for the third time in the last two games and added an assist. Sophomore Rahel Scully (Kingston, N.H.) also handed out her third assist of the season for the home squad.

The Monks jumped out to an early lead five minutes into the game when senior Aaliyah WilsonFalcone broke open a scoreless game with a goal off an assist by sophomore Elese Perron. The Mariners knotted things up 20 minutes later when Fonatine pushed the ball from the far sideline to the top of the penalty area, connecting with a streaking Roman, who pushed the ball past the charging Monk's keeper with her left foot for her fourth goal of the fall.

Saint Joseph's managed to tack on one more goal prior to halftime when freshman Jordan Huntley beat Mitchell goalkeeper to the ball just outside the goalie area and sent it into the back of the net, once again giving the visitors the lead. The score remained 2-1 through halftime, until sophomore Paige Sawyer made it a two goal game when she scored on a header from a corner kick by Lelia Wier, who notched her second assist of the day.

The Mariners got one back in the 79th minute when Rahel Scully assisted on Fontaine's team-leading seventh goal of the season, but Aaliyah WilsonFalcone gave the Monks insurance when she tallied her second goal of the game with just under two minutes to go.

Mitchell managed 12 shots, nine of which were on goal, while both teams were awarded three corner kick opportunities.

Coming off back to back clean sheets, junior goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) recorded her second most saves of the season by turning away 13 shots. Carly Downey recorded seven saves for the Monks and earned the win.

The Mariners (4-10-1, 2-10-1) will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, October 21st, when they host Emmanuel College in a GNAC tilt scheduled to kick off at 1:00 pm. The Monks (6-6-3, 6-4-3 GNAC) travel to Dean College for their next game on Friday, October 20th.
