Monks and Wildcats Duel to Scoreless Tie

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (8-3-2, 7-0-2 GNAC) remained undefeated in conference play but, despite holding a 22-3 advantage in shots, were unable to defeat visiting Johnson & Wales University (7-5-1, 4-3-1) on Saturday afternoon as the rival sides played to a scoreless tie in double overtime.

JWU keeper Jennifer Hurley '11 (Freeport, NY) singlehandedly kept the Monks off the board with 11 saves, many being highlight-reel quality. Katye Mayo '10 (Fairfield, ME) needed just one save to notch her third shutout of the season for St. Joe's.

The Monks had plenty of scoring chances, but Hurley proved difficult to beat on this unseasonably warm afternoon. SJC forward Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) had the first opportunity at in the sixth minute. With the ball inside the box on the right side, Call shot to the left corner, but Hurley made a diving stab and the ball trickled wide. Thirteen minutes later it was Call again, as the junior had a clear shot from about 20 yards. Hurley jumped and punched the ball, which deflected off the top of the crossbar high. Call was alone in front again in the 27th minute of play, but her diving kick sailed high over the goal.

Emily Wight '13 (Westbrook, ME), who played very well throughout the match, missed an opportunity to put the Monks on the board seven minutes into the second stanza. Jessica Needham '11 (East Bridgewater, MA) set up the freshman midfielder with a perfect crossing pass from the right, but Wight's one-timer effort sailed high.

Two minutes later Needham registered a scoring chance of her own. Anna Willis '09 (Gorham, ME) set up the play by hugging the right side line and hustling past a JWU defender while controlling the ball. Needham took a pass from Willis in the middle of the field at the 18, spun and sent a laser towards the net, but Hurley made another diving stop to preserve the deadlock.

Brianna Jordan '10 (Scarborough, ME) nearly ended the game in the first sudden-victory period with a chance from close range four minutes in, but Hurley challenged and made a body-save.

The game opened up in the second overtime period, but it was the Monks who notched the best scoring opportunities again. Wight took a shot from the left on the 18 that clanged the crossbar with 7:20 remaining and Willis nearly scored on a header off a corner piece, but the ball flew wide right.

St. Joe's recorded 11 shots on net, while the visitors mustered one ball on goal - a shot by Stefania Cubelli '12 (Norwood, MA) in the 80th minute. The Monks also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks in the stalemate.

Saint Joseph's will play at University of Maine-Farmington on Sunday at 1:00 PM. Johnson & Wales will play at GNAC rival Mount Ida College on Monday at 3:45 PM.
