Suffolk Stumps St. Joe's, 6-2

BOSTON, MA - Suffolk University (4-1-1, 3-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-1, 3-1), 6-2, in GNAC Women's Soccer action on Wednesday evening. Katherine Chambers '13 (Hampden, ME) and Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) netted the SJC markers in the loss.

Taylor Miranda '14 (Smithtown, NY) scored three goals for the Rams, while Lesley Hayden '12 (Ross, CA) tallied a goal and three helpers in the one-sided affair. Gabrielle Balestrier '14 (Mohnton, PA) added a goal and three assists and Monica Wolf '14 (Ballston Lake, NY) rounded out the Suffolk offensive contributors with a goal and two assists.

Miranda put the hosts on top with an eighth-minute breakaway goal set up by Wolf and Hayden passes. Chambers scored for the Monks 11 minutes later to tie the game, with Call and Casey Monaghan '13 (Portland, ME) being credited with assists on the play.

Eight minutes of scoreless play ensued before the Rams rattled off five unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Balestrier and Miranda scored in the 27th and 35th minute, respectively, to provide the hosts with a 3-1 cushion going into intermission.

Hayden opened the second stanza with a marker just 58 seconds into the latter half and Wolf netted her first collegiate goal at the 62:44 mark to lift the Rams to a four-goal advantage. Miranda capped the Rams' offensive effort with her third tally of the evening with a header goal in the 71st minute.

Call wrapped up the game scoring with her fourth goal of the season, off a Jennifer Keaney '13 (Scituate, MA) dish, in the 74th minute.

SJC keeper Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) registered six saves in the loss, while Rams' netminder Emily Joyce '11 (Easton, MA) made five stops between the pipes.

Suffolk held advantages in shots (21-12) and shots on goal (12-7), while the Monks netted a 4-1 lead in corner kicks in the losing effort.

The victory over the Monks is a first for the Suffolk Women's Soccer program. The Rams had lost all three of the previous meetings - by a 14-3 margin - between the conference rivals.

The Rams' scoring output is the most the Monks have allowed in a single game in Coach Bolanz's tenure at Saint Joseph's. St. Joe's hadn't allowed six goals since losing to Endicott College, 6-0, on October 19th, 2002. The Rams have scored at least four goals in each of their four victories this season.

Both teams will host conference opponents Saturday. Saint Joseph's will host Emmanuel College at 2:30 PM, while Suffolk will take on Saint Joseph (CT) at 3:00 PM.
