Eagles Net Late Goal, Top Monks 2-1

STANDISH, ME – Husson (9-5, 3-1 NAC) received a goal from Megan Lajoie '11 (Van Buren, ME) with just 1:37 remaining in regulation to earn a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's (6-5-1, 4-4-1 GNAC) in a non-conference women's soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on Thursday afternoon.

After a well-played first half yielded no scoring, both teams found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Husson junior Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) scored a header goal off a Megan Clement '11 (Brunswick, ME) at the 46:50 mark and Monks sophomore Katherine Chambers (Hampden, ME) countered just 23 seconds later to knot the game at one apiece.

Over 40 minutes of scoreless play ensued, but the visitors were able to evade extra play when Lajoie capitalized with the winner after a flurry of activity on their offensive end.

Chambers had an opportunity to put the Monks on top with 9:52 remaining, but a rocket off her right foot sailed just over the crossbar.

Jennifer Keaney '13 (Scituate, MA) was a key player in a losing effort for the Royal Blue, as the sophomore midfielder helped lock down the heart of the pitch with her play. Sophomore center back Shannon Fitzgerald (Amesbury, MA) stood out for the Monks on the defensive side and helped shut out the Eagles' top three goal scorers, who combined for five shots and none on goal in the contest.

SJC keeper Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) posted three stops between the pipes, while Eagles netminder Rozlyn Petersen '12 (Newport, ME) made three saves for the visitors. The Eagles held a 15-5 advantage in shots, with a 5-3 edge in shots on goal, and earned five corners against the Monks' four in the triumph.

Saint Joseph's, which lost by a 5-0 score to the Eagles in Bangor last season, fall to 29-5 in the history of the series with today's result.

Both teams will resume conference play on Saturday, as St. Joe's will play at Norwich University (8-5, 6-3 GNAC) at 1:00 PM, while Husson is set to host Green Mountain College at 1:00 PM.
