Falcons Down Monks, 2-0

STANDISH, ME – Albertus Magnus College (8-2-2, 4-1-2 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's (4-4-1, 1-4-1 GNAC), 2-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on a soggy Wednesday afternoon.

With heavy rain earlier in the day and light precipitation for the duration of the game, playing conditions were far from ideal, but the Falcons managed to score twice in the opening stanza and continued to press the Monks' defense in the second half to the tune of a 12-2 shots advantage.

Albertus took the lead in the 20th minute when Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.) placed a shot into an open net off a rebound. Facing a quick rush upfield, St. Joe's junior keeper Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, Maine) made a diving stop on a close-range shot by Shelley Mirmina (Milford, Conn.), but the rebound trickled free and landed on the foot of Nelson, who tapped the ball into the right corner.

The Falcons would extend their cushion to two goals 18 minutes later when Mirmina let fly a shot from the left side about 35 yards out, a kick that landed beyond Lorenzen's reach and in the top right corner of the net. Amanda Roke (Cheshire, Conn.) was credited with an assist on the play.

Lorenzen registered seven shots in the loss, while Albertus Magnus netminder Christina Dineson (Milford, Conn.) went untested in the Falcons' shutout effort.

The Falcons held a 17-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-0 lead in shots on target, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon. The Monks were flagged with 12 fouls while Albertus was hit with five fouls in the conference contest.

With the result, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-2 in the history of the series with Albertus Magnus College. The Monks defeated the Falcons in five consecutive meetings from 2007 to 2010, but have now fallen to AMC in consecutive meetings, with both setbacks being of the shutout variety.

Both sides resume action with road GNAC contests on Saturday, when Saint Joseph's travels to Norwich University and Albertus plays at Johnson & Wales University. Both matches are slated to start at 1:00 PM.
