STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College (3-1-0) recorded a 2-0 victory over University of Maine-Farmington (0-2-1) in a non-conference women's soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Lauren Chouinard (Gorham, Maine) and junior Danielle Daigle (Dayton, Maine) netted the Monks' markers in the victory while senior goalkeeper Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, Maine) made four saves to record her third shutout of the year.

Saint Joseph's controlled play early and had several solid scoring chances in the opening minutes, as Sam Peters (Gorham, Maine) and Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine) had opportunities in the first four minutes of play but both were denied.

Despite the Monks' efforts, the Beavers very nearly struck first in the ninth minute. Beavers junior forward Alexandra Crocker (Glenburn, Maine) broke free and steered a shot on net at the 8:29 mark, but Lorenzen was up to the task and made a diving stop to keep the visitors off the board.

The hosts broke the scoreless deadlock exactly five minutes later when Chouinard unleashed a low sinking shot from 18 yards out that found the netting to the right of UMF senior keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine).

Junior Doe Leckie (Naples, Maine) had an opportunity to double the SJC advantage just before the break. The speedy forward found her way past the Beavers' back line for a breakaway, but Lebel came up with the stop to preserve her team's one-goal deficit. Trying to build off the momentum created by her keeper's big save, Maine-Farmington senior Kayla Tuttle (Waterville, Maine) notched a shot on goal with 12 seconds left in the first half but was denied by Lorenzen.

Saint Joseph's gained some much-needed breathing room 9:52 into the second stanza when the Royal Blue potted a goal that could be described as an unfortunate play for the visitors. After receiving a pass from Ashley Beaulieu (Gorham, Maine), Daigle attempted a hard cross near the goalmouth that deflected off UMF defender Colleen Tourigny (York, Maine) and into the back of the net.

The goal, which seemed to take the wind out of the Beavers' sails, was credited to Daigle with the assist going to Beaulieu, as decided by the game's officials.

Saint Joseph's held advantages in both shots (12-6) and corners (5-1) in the victory. Both teams were flagged with four fouls. Lebel tallied seven saves in a losing effort while freshman Bridget Humphrey (Jefferson, Maine) came off the bench to lead the Beavers with a pair of shots on goal.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 28-13-4 in the history of the series with Maine-Farmington. Prior to this afternoon, the Monks and Beavers had not faced off on the pitch since the 2010 campaign when the Royal Blue blanked UMF by a 4-0 margin at home on September 9th.

Saint Joseph's returns to the field on Saturday when the Monks host Johnson & Wales University in what will be the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both sides. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Maine-Farmington will host Bowdoin College in a non-conference match on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
