Monks Saddle Mustangs with Overtime Setback, 3-2

NEWTON, Mass. -- After leading 2-1 over the Monks of Saint Joseph's (Maine) after the first half of action, Mount Ida dropped a 3-2 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt.

Both teams exchanged several scoring opportunities throughout the entire game, while St. Joe's outshot Mount Ida 19-13.

With the setback, Mount Ida drops to 2-8-4 (0-6-2 GNAC) while St. Joe's improves to 8-7 (5-3 GNAC).

After nearly a couple early tallies by the hosts, the Monks were able to stave off the hungry Mustangs for the first 25 minutes of the first half. Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) took the ball down the right side of the field to just past the top corner of the eighteen yard box where she fired a ball past the outstretched hands of freshman netminder Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Maine) for the 1-0 Monk lead.

Just under ten minutes later freshman Emily Oltmanns (Golden, Colo.) sent in a corner kick that landed at the feet of sophomore Rachel Lambert (Lebanon, Conn.) who then found teammate Hailey Serino (Northwood, N.H.) for the equalizer, Serino's second goal in as many games, knotting the score at 1-1.

Five minutes later senior forward Izzy Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) notched her team leading 8th goal of the season off a feed from midfielder Morgan Rzonca (Bristol, Conn.) who then fired a shot past Monk keeper Brook Troup (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) to give the Mustangs the 2-1 edge with ten minutes remaining in the half.

Both teams once again had scoring opportunities arise but the half would end with the Mustangs leading 2-1.

Saint Joseph's came out of the break firing as they outshot the Mustangs 12-2 in the second half of play.

Senior Hannah LeBlanc (Andover, Mass.) took a feed from fellow Monk Angela Valenti (Litchfield, N.H.) on the left side of the box before firing the ball back post while tying the score at 2-2.

The Monks continued pressuring the Mustang defense but Mount Ida stood tall and preserved the 2-2 tie ending the half and going into overtime.

Three minutes and twenty-four seconds into the overtime period, freshman Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that Parkin got a hand on, but then bounced off the cross bar to the ground and into the goal giving the Monks the 3-2 OT victory, they're 5th GNAC win of the season.

Mount Ida will be back in GNAC action on Saturday when they travel to Boston to take on Emmanuel with kickoff slated for 12:00 PM. St. Joe's will hit the road again to Newton, Massachusetts on Saturday to take on the Lasers of Lasell College with that game set to begin at noon time as well.
