SJC Women's Soccer Class of 2024 Announced

SJC Women's Soccer Class of 2024 Announced

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College Head Coach Jenelle Harris has announced the women's soccer Class of 2024.

Coach Harris, who is about to begin her eighth year as the Monks' leader, is bringing in 10 players from three different states, as four forwards, three defenders, two midfielders, and one goalkeeper are being welcomed into the fold. This talented group of incoming freshmen will help improve the Monks' depth and versatility as St. Joe's looks to advance to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship for the third-consecutive season.

Overall, Saint Joseph's returns 16 players from the 2018 side, which went 16-4 overall – including 10-2 in conference play – en route to claiming the program's first GNAC Championship and subsequent automatic NCAA Tournament qualifier. Top returners include senior midfielder McKenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine), junior goalkeeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine), and junior forward Kayley Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) – all three claimed All-Conference honors last fall with Grogan headlining the group as the 2019 GNAC Goalkeeper of the Year.

"This talented incoming class joins our strong corps of returners and we are preparing to make another deep run in the playoffs and capture another championship," adds Coach Harris. "We are excited to see what they can accomplish at the collegiate level. This class, along with our returners, will contribute to our program's philosophy of competitive fire, commitment, accountability, and family on and off the field."

Last fall, the Monks posted a 14-4-3 overall record with a 9-2-1 mark in GNAC play on the way to claiming the #2 seed in the conference tournament for the second-consecutive season. The 2018 GNAC Champions advanced to the conference title bout after topping USJ in PK's in the quarterfinal and edging Emmanuel, 2-1, in semifinal action but their bid to repeat as GNAC champs was thwarted by top-seeded Johnson & Wales, who defeated the Monks by a 2-1 score in the title contest on Saturday.

The GNAC Championship setback signaled the end of college soccer for the program's six seniors: Olivia Alesio (Schenectady, N.Y.), Cori Balam (Lyndeborough, N.H.), Peggy Balboni (Millis, Mass.), Hannah Butler (Melrose, Mass.), Jade Jordan (Baldwin, Maine), and Hailey Tarr (Eliot, Maine). This senior class has helped Saint Joseph's post a 53-21-7 (.654) overall record, including a 32-9-5 (.696) mark in GNAC play, as well as the program's first GNAC Championship last fall.
