Huskies Race Past Monks, 4-1

STANDISH, Maine – University of Southern Maine (2-0-0) topped Saint Joseph's College (0-2-0), 4-1, in a non-conference women's soccer match at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior forward Emma Forgues (Gorham, Maine) put the Huskies on the board in the 11th minute and the visitors' 1-0 edge held true until the 56th minute when an SJC defensive miscue led to an own goal.

Saint Joseph's made it a 2-1 game at the 64:14 mark when freshman Kate Russell (Kennebunk, Maine) netted her first collegiate goal following a corner kick and scrum in front of the Huskies' net.

The one-goal deficit lasted just three minutes however, as Ciera Hill (Pembroke, N.H.) put USM back on top by two with a goal scored off a rebounded shot taken by Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine).

St. Joe's applied plenty of offensive pressure for the remainder of the contest but failed to convert. USM capped the game scoring with a Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) strike with 31 seconds on the game clock.

TEAM STATS:

Southern Maine held the lead in shots (29-21) and shots on goal (17-13) while the Monks posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

Junior Carly Downey turned away 12 shots for the Monks while Brenna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) posted four saves in the first half and Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H.) made eight saves in the second frame for the Huskies.
