Nor'easters Defeat Monks in Opener, 5-1

STANDISH, Maine – University of New England (1-0-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-1-0), 5-1, in a non-conference women's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Friday evening. The match was the 2023 season opener for both programs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Nor'easters opened the scoring in the ninth minute when junior Tori Keyes (Hooksett, N.H.) netted an unassisted tally. The 1-0 edge held until the 53rd minute, when senior Lizzie Frattaroli (Boston, Mass.) punched home her first of two goals of the night with senior Hannah Niles (Saco, Maine) earning an assist.

The teams swapped scores during a seven-minute window to make it a 3-1 game, as UNE senior Emily Martin (Georgetown, Maine) hit pay dirt at the 59:15 mark and SJC senior Tatum Hancock (Damariscotta, Maine) cut the hosts' deficit to two goals with her first tally of the year with 24 minutes left.

University of New England managed to gain more of a cushion however, as Frattaroli scored again in the 83rd minute and freshman Ashley Clark (Windham, Maine) added her first NCAA goal at the 89:03 mark.

TEAM STATS:

The Nor'easters held the lead in shots (23-7), shots on goal (10-3), and corner kicks (7-0) on the evening.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior goalie Carly Downey (Yarmouth, Maine) made five saves in the losing effort while UNE featured three netminders in the victory with starter Sydney Gillingham (Standish, Maine) making a pair of stops in 61:58 to earn the win. Anna Flaherty (Lynn, Mass.) and Ariel Martin (Denver, Colo.) also saw time for the visitors.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 1-8-1 all-time versus University of New England and has now suffered four consecutive losses at the hands of the Nor'easters.

Saint Joseph's is back in action on Sunday when the team plays at University of Southern Maine in a 1:00 PM kick-off.
