Babson Sweeps Saint Joseph's, 1-0 and 14-6

BABSON PARK, MA - The Babson College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College today, 1-0 and 14-6. Babson, ranked 10th in the nation by the NFCA, improved to 29-5 with the wins, while the Monks slipped to 11-18.

Babson outhit Saint Joseph's 12-3 in game one, but the contest came down to the Beavers' final at-bat. With the score tied at 0-0, sophomore Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left-center - her third hit of the game. She then moved to third on a flyout to right by sophomore Darcy Lantz (Kingston, Pa.) and scored the game-winning run when sophomore Alex Lazar (Milton, Mass.) ripped a single off the first baseman's glove and into right field.

Junior Meg Gaskell (Uxbridge, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Beavers - her fifth of the season - to improve her record to 10-1 overall. She surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings of work. The junior righthander pitched her way out of numerous jams in the contest, as three of the four baserunners she allowed were stranded in scoring position. Saint Joseph's senior Helene Liaci (Clifton, N.J.) hit a one-out triple in the fourth, but was left there when Gaskell induced a fly out to center and a groundout back to the mound. The Monks then put a runner on second with one out in the sixth, but Gaskell got the next two batters to ground out to preserve the shutout.

Senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, Maine) also pitched well in game one for Saint Joe's, allowing only one run despite giving up 12 hits.

Babson jumped all over the visitors in the third inning of game two, sending 13 people to the plate and scoring eight runs. Senior co-captain Kara Courtney (Northampton, Mass.) and first-year Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) both hit two-run doubles in the inning, while senior co-captain Jamie Bowman (West Bridgewater, Mass.) also drove in a pair with a single to right. Saint Joe's then got two runs back on two hits, a walk, and an error in the fourth, but the Beavers came right back with two in the bottom of the inning, capped by an RBI groundout by junior Erica Barry (Malden, Mass.) that plated classmate Alison Carey (Rocky Hill, Conn.) from third to give Babson a 10-2 advantage.

Trailing by eight, the Monks got back into the game with four runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a run-scoring single by Liaci and an RBI groundout by first-year Megan Farrell (Abington, Mass.). The score remained 10-6 until the bottom of the sixth, when Babson plated four runs to end the contest. Sophomore Robyn Woodruff (Clifton, N.J.) doubled in two of those runs and then scored on a basehit by Courtney, while the final run came home on an outfield error.

Sophomore Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.) allowed one run in four innings to earn the win for Babson, as she improved to 7-2 overall. Courtney finished game two with three hits, while Cartullo and Lazar each had three hits in game one. Liaci and junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, Maine) each had three hits on the afternoon for Saint Joe's.
