Saint Joseph's Wins Season Opener

CAPE CORAL, FL - Saint Joseph's College (1-0) opened the season with a 4-3 victory over Simmons College (0-3) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Cape Coral Florida today. This was the first of two games for St. Joe's today.

Senior leadership was the story today as tri-captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) came out firing for St. Joe's, recording 2 of her 7 strike-outs in the first inning. The Lady Monks scored two runs in the first inning as senior tri-captain Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) singled and senior tri-captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) notched a 2 RBI home run.

St. Joe's sophomore Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) singled in the second inning and eventually scored on an error to go up 3-0. Simmons evened the score in the third inning with two singles, a two RBI double by Anne Hennigan, and an RBI triple by Ann Talarico.

In the sixth inning, Dowling and Liaci singled. Sophomores Jaime Morrison (Auburn, ME) and Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) singled and after 3 wild pitches, Liaci scored the game winning run for the Lady Monks.
