Monks Sweep GNAC Doubleheader

STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's (17-9, 12-4 GNAC) defeated Daniel Webster (6-19, 4-13 GNAC) 13-5 and 2-0 in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. FY Cat DeSimone (Waterboro, ME) was 3-4 with a run and an RBI in game one and starting pitcher SO Christy Wezowicz (Granville, MA) struck out five in a complete game shutout in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

St. Joe's opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first when JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA), who reached on a single, scored on an error by the DWC third baseman.

The Lady Monks went back to work in the second inning to score 6 runs off of 5 hits. SO Jillian Kimball (Albany TWP, ME) and SR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) both recorded 2-RBI singles and Cat DeSimone sent home a run with a base knock in the inning that saw St. Joe's take a 7-0 lead.

St. Joe's extended their lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the third. Kimball hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME), who led off the inning with a single. JR Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) scored the 9th run on a miscue by the Daniel Webster shortstop.

SJC starting pitcher FY Kiera Walsh (Benton, ME) rolled in the first three innings but ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth. The Lady Eagles managed to score 5 runs off 4 hits and 2 SJC errors to make the score 9-5, St. Joe's.

The Royal Blue proceeded to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 13-5 and impose the eight-run mercy rule. FY Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) drove home two runs with a double and Alysn Ludwig registered two RBI's with a double of her own to end the game.

For the Lady Monks, Anna Willis, Alysn Ludwig and Liz Jordan all recorded two hits and Jillian Kimball had 3 RBI's. Kiera Walsh allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings to notch her 11th win of the season.

GAME TWO

Lady Eagle's starter SR Erin Moseley (Sterling, MA) and SJC starter Christy Wezowicz locked heads in a pitchers duel in the nightcap after the high-scoring opener. The pair combined to allow 11 hits and one earned run in the 2-0 victory for St. Joe's.

SO Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) led off the bottom of the second inning with a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a FY Renee Leach (Shapleigh, ME) groundout to third base to give the Lady Monks a 1-0 lead.

St. Joe's went on to add the final run of the game in the third inning when Alysn Ludwig singled, swiped second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball to make the score 2-0, Lady Monks.

For the Lady Monks, Wezowicz dealt a complete game and allowed only 5 hits. Liddy van der Linden tallied 2 hits and a run in the victory.

For the Lady Eagles, Moseley also threw a complete game and allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and one earned run while striking out five.

St. Joe's will travel to Boston, MA on Thursday April 17th to take on GNAC rival Suffolk University. The opening game of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 3:30 PM.
