FORT MYERS, FL - The Saint Joseph's College
Softball team lost both of their games in extra innings on the
team's second day of their Florida trip. FY Alyssa
Dunn (Standish, ME) collected 5 hits in the two games. St.
Joe's is off to a 1-3 start this season and will next play on
Thursday when they take on Tri-State and Wisconsin Lutheran.
In the first game of the day against WPI (MA), St. Joe's managed to
put three runs on the board in the third inning by way of some
nifty baserunning and clutch hitting. JR Liz
Jordan (Sandwich, MA) singled with one out and
proceeded to steal both second and third base before being sent
home via a JR Alysn Ludwig
(Waldoboro, ME) single. Ludwig went on to steal
second base to get into scoring position for SO Liddy van
der Linden (Worcester, MA), who drove her home with a
single. SO Jillian Kimball (Albany TWP, ME) walked
and later scored on an error made by the WPI leftfielder to account
for the third run. SO pitcher Christy Wezowicz
(Granville, MA) held the Engineers batters in check through five
innings before allowing 2 runs in the sixth inning to cut the SJC
lead to 3-2. WPI's JR Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) tied the game
with a solo home run in the seventh inning to the send the game
into extra innings.
WPI pushed a run across the plate in the top of the eighth to take
the 4-3 lead. St. Joe's countered with a run in the bottom of the
inning as Liddy van der Linden scored off an FY
Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME)
struck-ball that was misplayed by the Engineers' first baseman to
tie the game at four apiece. WPI exploded for 5 runs in the top of
the ninth with four runs coming off the bat of SO Meg Foley
(Belchertown, MA), who connected for a grand slam home run to help
the Engineers take a commanding 9-4 lead in the extra frame, a lead
they would not relinquish.
For St. Joe's, starting pitcher Christy Wezowicz
threw seven innings and scattered seven hits, allowed two earned
runs and two walks while striking out seven.
Alyssa Dunn was 3-4 with a
double; Liz Jordan went 2-3 with
a double, two stolen bases and a run scored and
Alysn Ludwig was 2-3 with a run,
RBI and two stolen bases. FY Kiera
Walsh (Benton, ME) took the loss in relief.
In the team's second game of the day, St. Joe's squared off against
St. Mary's College (IN). SJC was behind 4-0 after five innings of
play as St. Mary's pushed two runs across the plate in both the 3rd
and 5th innings. It appeared that St. Joe's would be shut out after
an emotional loss in the first game of the day, but the Lady Monks
rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force
extra innings. FY Kayla Soucy
(Colebrook, NH) led off the inning with a single and
Liz Jordan, Anna
Willis and Jillian
Kimball all followed with base knocks to begin the
inning and Liddy van der Linden
smacked a double to drive in three runs during the last inning
offensive surge. St. Mary's scored a run in the top of the eighth
to take the lead and St. Joe's stranded two runners on base in the
bottom of the inning to take their second hard-fought loss of the
day.
Jillian Kimball went 2-4 at the
plate with a run and an RBI and Alyssa
Dunn was 2-3 with a double in the defeat. Starting
pitcher Kiera Walsh went the
distance and allowed four earned runs, nine hits and one walk while
striking out two batters in eight innings of work.
