FORT MYERS, FL - The SJC softball team won both of their games
on the team's final day of their spring trip by defeating RPI (NY)
13-9 and Olivet College (MI) 7-5 in the Gene Cusic Classic to
improve their season record to 5-5. Starting pitcher FY
Kiera Walsh (Benton, ME) got the
win and SR Megan Farrell
(Abington, MA) and FY Alyssa Dunn
(Standish, ME) each knocked in two runs in the victory. St. Joe's
used an eight-run sixth inning to defeat Olivet in the second game.
SO Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) hit a
grand slam home run in the big inning and had 5 RBI's and JR
Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) was
3-5 with 3 runs in the game. SO Christy
Wezowicz (Granville, MA) registered the victory on
the mound.
In the opening game, RPI held a 4-2 lead after the first inning and
led by as many as four runs (8-4) entering the sixth inning. With
the help of a Liddy van der Linden grand slam, the
Monks rallied for 8 runs off of 6 hits in the top of the sixth
inning to take a 12-8 lead. Both teams scored a run in the seventh
inning to give the Lady Monks a 13-9 victory.
Megan Farrell and
Alyssa Dunn each had two hits and
FY Cat DiSimone (Waterboro, ME)
scored 2 runs in the victory over RPI. Starter
Christy Wezowicz went the
distance on the mound and allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and 6 earned runs
while striking out 4 advance her season record to 2-3.
St. Joe's jumped out to a 5-1 lead off of four hits and two Olivet
errors in the bottom of the first inning. The Comets chipped away
at the SJC lead, scoring a run in the second and two runs in the
fifth inning to come within one run of the Lady Monks, 5-4. St.
Joe's countered with two runs of their own with three hits in the
bottom of the fifth. Olivet scored a run in the top of the sixth
but left two runners on base in the inning and another in the
seventh to come up short in their rally attempt. Overall, the
Comets stranded 10 baserunners in the game.
Alysn Ludwig and
Megan Farrell each had two hits
in the SJC victory. Starter Kiera
Walsh pitched seven innings and allowed 11 hits, 1
walk and 4 earned runs and struck out 2 batters to improve her
season record to 3-3.
Overall, St. Joe's batted .322 (96-298) during the 5-5 spring break
trip. Alysn Ludwig led the way
with a .424 (14-33) average and 9 runs and was a perfect 7-7 in
stolen base attempts while playing an error-free center field.
First year player Alyssa Dunn hit
.412 (14-34) with 3 doubles and 6 RBI's and SO
Jillian Kimball (Albany TWP, ME)
hit .344 (11-32) with 7 runs, 2 doubles and 10 RBI's during the
trip. Clean up hitter Liddy van der Linden
provided the punch with 2 home runs and 11 RBI's while posting a
.323 (10-31) batting average.
The Lady Monks will next play on March 22nd at Albertus Magnus
College (CT) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at 4:00
PM.
