Monks Split with Rivier College

NASHUA, NH - St. Joe's (19-11, 14-6 GNAC) took advantage of three Rivier (errors to score two runs in the sixth inning to win game one in a pitcher's duel, 2-1. FY Kiera Walsh (Benton, ME) earned the victory on the mound for the Lady Monks and struck out eight batters in the game. St. Joe's lost a heartbreaker in game two in nine innings, 5-4. The Raiders scored twice in the fifth to tie the game and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Starting pitcher SO Christy Wezowicz (Granville, MA) struck out 9 batters in 8.1 innings and sophomore Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) recorded five hits in the twinbill.

GAME ONE

After the teams fought to a tieless deadlock through five innings, the Lady Monks broke through in the top of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. Anna Willis led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on an JR Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) struck ball that was misplayed by the Rivier third baseman. The Raiders' defense suffered another letdown when JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA) hit a ball to short that was also misplayed to load the bases with no outs. SO Jillian Kimball (Albany TWP, ME) followed with a fielder's choice to reach first and register an RBI by scoring Willis for the first run of the game. FY Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) singled with one out to send home Ludwig to give the Lady Monks a 2-0 lead.

SO Sarah Wilson (Stow, MA) knocked in a run in the bottom of the seventh with a groundout to short to make the final score 2-1.

For St. Joe's, Anna Willis was 2-3 with a run and Kiera Walsh improved her season record to 12-4.

GAME TWO

Rivier starting pitcher SO Monica White (Augusta, ME) takes the loss after giving up five hits and no earned runs. White struck out 10 in the losing effort.

Rivier led 2-1 after two innings of play in the nightcap game. Jillian Kimball recorded an RBI with a single that scored Alysn Ludwig to account for the SJC tally.

The Lady Monks scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take the 4-2 lead. FY Natasha Howard (Farmington, ME) singled home SO Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2. St. Joe's gained a 4-2 advantage when Alyssa Dunn drove home two runs with a double in the fifth. Willis and Ludwig scored the SJC runs.

Rivier managed to plate two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a FY Nikki Bondanza (Shrewsbury, MA) double to tie the game at four apiece.

SO Brenna Campbell (Nashua, NH) scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for the Raiders.

For St. Joe's, Anna Willis had 3 hits and Dunn, Ludwig and Kimball all recorded 2 hits apiece.

For the Raiders, Monica White had three hits and Nikki Bondanza had 2 hits. White earned the win with 6 innings in relief and notched 7 strikeouts.
