WATERVILLE, ME - Saint Joseph's (29-13) defeated Colby College
(18-11), 8-0, in a mercy rule-shortened opener before falling in
the nightcap, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon. Kiera
Walsh '11 (Benton, ME) improved to 11-4 on the
year with four shutout innings in the opening win.
Former Saint Joseph's Head Coach Dick
Bailey will retire with a 443-296-3 career record
in 24 seasons as a college softball coach. The 2008 SJC Athletics
Hall of Fame inductee posted a 244-101 record as the Lady Monks'
skipper for 11 seasons and guided the team to four NAIA New England
Championships. Bailey was honored by both teams
for his contributions. Jamie Smyth '92, the
current head coach of the Lady Monks, was an assistant under
Bailey at Saint Joseph's.
Coach Smyth became the winningest
coach in SJC softball history on April 15th with an 8-0 win over
GNAC foe Emmanuel College. Through 12 seasons,
Smyth has posted a 255-215 (.543) record as the
Lady Monks' clipboard carrier.
Brittany Tasi pitched a five-hit shutout in the second game for
Colby.
The Mules scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning. Alyssa
Lepore had a bases clearing double and Christine Gillespie drove in
the other run with a suicide squeeze bunt. Gillespie had two hits
in the game, while Kelly Ross and Heather Quadir both had one hit
and one run.
Emily Leverone had two hits in
the second game for the Lady Monks.
St. Joe's scored five times in the second inning and added three
more runs in the third in the mercy rule-shortened five inning
game. Anna Willis,
Elizabeth Jordan, and
Alyssa Dunn each had two hits for
the Lady Monks.
Kiera Walsh pitched four innings
and Michelle Prevost worked the
fifth to combine on the SJC shutout.
Alex Essman's double was one of two Colby hits in the opener.
