Monks Extend Winning Streak to Eight Games

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - Saint Joseph's (14-6, 8-2 GNAC) took a pair of games from conference foe Johnson & Wales (2-19, 1-9), 5-0 and 4-2, on Sunday afternoon to run the team's winning streak to eight contests. Opening game starter Madylan Kluna '12 (Standish, ME) improved to 4-4 after tossing seven shutout innings while fanning eight and allowing three hits and a walk. The Lady Monks erased a 2-1 deficit with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in the nightcap to help Christy Wezowicz '10 (Granville, MA), now 4-1 on the year, collect the winning decision in the circle. Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, NH) posted four hits - including a double and a triple - in the two-game set and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) smacked her first homer of the year in the closing contest.

GAME ONE

As it turned out, the Lady Monks scored one more run than they needed in the first inning of the opening game. With one out, Liz Jordan '09 (Sandwich, MA) reached on an error by JWU second sacker Korissa Bailey '12 (Pelham, NH) and later scored on a Liddy van der Linden '10 (Worcester, MA) single. The next hitter, Dunn, plated the junior shortstop with a single to provide the Royal Blue with a two-run cushion.

St. Joe's tacked on a run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh while Kluna cruised through the Wildcats' lineup. In the fifth frame, Leverone led off with a triple and scrambled home on a passed ball. Jordan reached on an error to open the seventh and later scored on another passed ball, and Leverone singled and scored when van der Linden was thrown out at third after trying to advance on a Dunn groundout to short.

GAME TWO

After Leverone scored for St. Joe's off a van der Linden single in the top of the first, Johnson & Wales scored single runs in the first and second innings to obtain an early 2-1 lead in the nightcap. Holliann Barry '12 (Newburgh, NY) led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a Kirsten Griffiths '09 (North Haven, CT) base knock. In the second, Ashley Mata '10 (Wheeling, IL) was plated by a Barry single to provide the hosts with an early two-run advantage.

The Lady Monks scored a run in the fourth to tie the conference contest, 2-2. van der Linden reached, and advanced to second, on an error by Barry in left field and scored on a single by pinch hitter Samantha Gray '12 (Yarmouth, ME).

Alysn Ludwig '09 (Waldoboro, ME) helped produce the go-ahead tally by drawing a one-out walk in the fifth inning and moving up a base by swiping second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Ludwig scored when Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) grounded out to JWU pitcher Liana Rivera '10 (Queens, NY) to put her team up, 3-2.

Dunn's first tater of the season, and second of her career, provided the Lady Monks with some breathing room. The sophomore's blast came with two out in the sixth and capped the game scoring by lifting the victors to a 4-2 lead.

Six different SJC hitters recorded a base hit and Willis, van der Linden, Dunn and Gray all registered an RBI in the win. Wezowicz allowed six hits and fanned three in the complete game effort.

For JWU, Barry was 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Bailey went 2-2. Rivera, now 1-9 on the year, allowed three earned runs and six hits in the loss.

Saint Joseph's will host Southern Maine on Tuesday in a 3:30 PM doubleheader at Ward Park. Johnson & Wales will host Rhode Island College in a 4:00 PM twin bill on Tuesday.
