Monks Topple Lasers, 15-0 & 8-0

STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's (24-10, 16-6 GNAC) trounced Lasell College (20-17, 13-9), 15-0 and 8-0, in a conference twin bill at Ward Park on Saturday afternoon. Alysn Ludwig '09 (Waldoboro, ME), who scored six runs and stole three bases in the doubleheader, broke the program's career stolen bases record by swiping second in the opener. Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, ME) went 4-6 with five RBI and four runs and has tied the SJC single-season record for hits with 64 as a first-year player. Starting pitchers Kiera Walsh '11 (Benton, MA) and Christy Wezowicz '10 (Granville, MA) both tossed shutout ball for five innings and improve to 9-3 and 7-2, respectively, with the winning decisions.

GAME ONE

St. Joe's scored three runs in the first, six in the third and two in the fourth in the blowout victory. Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) started the scoring baggage with an RBI single in the first inning and Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) followed with a double to plate Leverone along with the sophomore first baseman to give the hosts an early 3-0 lead.

Leverone sent home a pair with a double as part of the six-run second frame and Liddy van der Linden '10 (Worcester, MA) copied the feat to send the sophomore slugger scrambling across the plate. Dunn contributed with the Lady Monks' third consecutive double to plate van der Linden and scored on a triple off the bat of Kimball, who proceeded to score on a wild pitch.

St. Joe's went on to pad their lead with three more in the bottom of the third to take a 13-0 advantage. Leverone knocked home a run with a fielder's choice, Dunn recorded an RBI single and two scored on a Samantha Gray '12 (Yarmouth, ME) base knock.

Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) and Katelyn Call '12 (Portland, ME/McAuley) both recorded RBI's in the bottom of the fourth to cap the game scoring with St. Joe's earning a 15-0 mercy-rule shortened victory.

Five Saint Joseph's players had two or more hits in the triumph. Dunn went 3-4 with three runs and three RBI and Leverone was 2-4 with three runs scored and three batted in. Ludwig was 2-2 and crossed the plate four times, Kimball had a double and a triple and plated three runs and Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) went 2-3. Walsh fanned three batters and allowed three hits in her ninth win of the season.

Jacqueline Losseff '11 (Oak Bluffs, MA) (12-6) started the game for the Lasers and went two innings, allowing nine earned runs and nine hits with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The momentum stayed in the Lady Monks' favor in the nightcap, as the Royal Blue took control of the game immediately by scoring seven runs off four hits and one Lasell error in the bottom of the first inning. St. Joe's tacked on the eighth run of the game in the third frame.

Leverone singled home Ludwig to start the scoring in the first inning and later scored on a Kimball fielder's choice. Call doubled to send home two more, Natasha Howard '11 (Farmington, ME) recorded an RBI with a sac fly to center and Willis plated a run with a base knock as part of the six-run first.

Ludwig would score the final run of the day on a Leverone base hit after reaching on an error by Lasell pitcher Jennie Beaton '12 (Reading, MA).

For St. Joe's, Leverone was 2-2 with two RBI and Willis went 2-3 with a run batted in. Wezowicz allowed four hits and one base on balls with one punch out in five innings to collect her seventh win of the year. Ludwig stole two bases in the closing contest and now has 60 career thefts. The SJC pitching staff has allowed just one run in the last six games and the Lady Monks have outscored their opponents 50-1 during the stretch.

Lasell starter Jacqueline Losseff lasted just 1/3 of an inning before being lifted in favor of Beaton. Losseff allowed six earned runs on three hits and two walks to fall to 12-7 on the year. Beaton allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings of duty.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC foe Albertus Magnus College on Sunday at 1:00 PM, while Lasell is set to take on Pine Manor College in a conference twin bill at home starting at noon.
