Monks Take Two from Pine Manor, 5-3 & 7-2

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The Saint Joseph's softball team improved to 4-2 in GNAC play, and 10-6 overall, with a pair of wins over Pine Manor College (4-8, 2-2 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon. Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) registered four hits and a pair of RBI's and Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, NH) continues to swing a hot bat for the Lady Monks, having gone 7-8 with her third home run of the season in the sweep. Starters Madylan Kluna '12 (Standish, ME) and Christy Wezowicz '10 (Granville, MA) earned the pitching victories and improve to 2-4 and 3-1, respectively.

St. Joseph's (8-6, 2-2 GNAC) struck first in the opener, with Dunn's two-run double putting the Lady Monks in front, 2-0, in the third. Two innings later, Kayla Nielsen's '12 (Saco, ME) two-out two-run shot to left plated Patty Pabon (Bronx, NY), tying the score at three.

The Monks insurance runs would be the difference, with a Leverone single plating Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) in the sixth, and Alysn Ludwig's '09 (Waldoboro, ME) opposite-field single scoring Dunn in the seventh.

Kluna worked a four-hitter, striking out two in the win. PMC starter Jackie Martinez (Albuquerque, NM) pitched her third complete game in two days in the loss.

Kayla Ferrara's '12 (South Portland, ME) team-best third homer of the season, this one to straight-away center, got the Gators going in the second contest.

St. Joe's again answered, with Liddy van der Linden's '10 (Worcester, MA) two-run double capping a three-run third. Saint Joseph's put Pine Manor away with Leverone's solo blast in the fifth and added two more in the seventh, compliments of a double off the bat of Natasha Howard '11 (Farmington, ME).

Tara Doehler '12 (Lakeville, MA) took the tough-luck loss, allowing seven runs - two earned - in her seven innings. Wezowicz struck out a pair and walked none in the win.

Saint Joseph's will play at St. Joseph College (CT) tomorrow in a conference doubleheader, which starts at 12:00 PM. The Gators travel to Johnson & Wales tomorrow at noon and return home to take on Emmanuel on Monday at 3:30 PM.
